Buying a performance muffler
Wednesday, January 31, 2007 6:49 PM
I've been searching for a performance muffler and a place to get it installed for a long time now and am stuck. I want to get that nice deep sound but not overally loud. I have gone to Speedy several times but it seems that after I purchase the muffler, have it installed (new hanger, properly positioned) and labor it's going to cost me a fortune. Does anyone have any suggestions to what I can do or where they would recommend going?

Thanks

i got the rksport half cat-back for mine and i love it, its got a nice deep tone that definitely does not sound like a can of bees behind the car, and it looks good too. im not a fan of the canister mufflers. ill see what i can do to get a vid up here for ya tomorrow if you want.

I have finally decided on what muffler I am putting on my auto Sunfire.

Magnaflow muffler #11124 w/ a Cobalt tip.

I appreciate all the help and advice on helping me choose a muffler.

Thanks

drew, you might wanna go for the 18" case length. little more quiet, but flows just as good.

Ok, I'll be sure to look into that. Do you know what size the stock case lenght is?

I went out in the daylight and measured my case length and it's 20". Is it possible to put on a muffler with a 14" case length or will it be too short?

The longer it is the quieter it will be

Ok well if they have the muffler in 18" I'll get that one but if not I'll just end up getting the 14". Will there be a huge difference?

If I were to buy a performance muffler with a 18" case wouldn't it just be as quiet as a stock muffler? Would you not recommend the muffler with a 14" case?

No, because the it will flow a little better than stock. Youll be fine with the 14 inch case. Thats what I had for years, just a muffler, and it sounded really nice, deep, and grumbly. If your worried about a tid bit of noise, then I wouldnt be modifying.

Alright sounds good.

Don't get the 14, go with the 18. Trust.
Also, don't forget to pick up a 22" resonator (either a 4" round magnaflow, 22" long, or a dynomax thrush, or a purple horny or something) and you're golden.
Without the resonator it will sound nice in car, but outside it will sound like bumble-bees. And as was stated above, the longer your mufflers/resonators are, the deeper the resulting tone, due to more sound deadening material inside the muffler itself. Hence, GO BIG.

I have another vid of another car with a VERY similar setup to the one I'm running... only difference is a different brand resonator - his is a purple horny.

I was worried this muffler would sound like stock. It's only a 2" inlet/outlet. I am going to try and get the 18" case just to be sure. Will a resonator make it quieter? Is there a stock resonator on my car? All I was planning on changing was the muffler.

I am confused, Is there not already a stock resonator on my car to begin with? Why would I need to buy another one if there is? Once this is clear I will be set to go!

Alright, I'm going with the 18" or 20" case length(can't see there being much a difference between the both) and I don't think I will worry about an after market resonator because as far as I know stock cars already have resonators on them. Thanks for all the help!

Well I picked up this Magnaflow tip today to have installed on the muffler which is at the shop. Just can't make up my mind between a 14" case or 18" case. It is only a 2"inlet/outlet so I don't think a 14" case will be as loud as I would expect.

Magnaflow tip:

Vid ----> Dual Glass with polished stainless tips. It's a little louder than I wanted but not "wake up the neighborhood loud" and it sounds deep. I didn't really rev on that hard in that vid though because my neighbors are all cranky old people... Sounds nicer in person.

Sounds good. What size muffler case do you have and do you just have a muffler or full exhaust?
