Just thought I would post this for the benefit for anyone who has bought the prothane or RKsport engine mounts for the 2200 motor cavs and sunfires.
I recently bought A full engine mount kit for my 2200 01' cav and found the vibrations from the top mount being extremely unbearable for daily driving. Instead of simply getting rid of the mounts I chose to modify what I had to make it work. I pulled the top mount only (insert) and took it to the shop, Shaved off the top nubs that fit into the two "Steps" in the stock rubber mount and the hacked away at it with a dremel and hacksaw. I shaved the most urethane off the insides of the mount around the sides which seemed to be the tightest fit. I shaved all surfaces down however and reinstalled the new, slightly smaller insert back in with sastifying results.
I found the engine still rocks VERY slightly but only to a point, I would say it moves at most 4-5 degrees now with one HUGE advantage to the daily driver. NO Bad vibrations to speak of. The dash no longer shakes violently, or at all for that matter. However it still does have that tighter, solid feel the engine mounts deliver in stock form.
I know jason from A-PLus is gonna come plug his mounts now but I got these WITH the tranny mounts for 105 shipped so it was a good deal on mounts and with a little modification they work perfect for what I need them to. So anyone with RK sport (prothane products rebranded) or Prothane's actual mounts in their 2200 with a vibration prob, feel free to contact me for some more tips and or instructions on how you can do this and where to reshape the mount.

Just get a ttr upper mount, which is much stronger. Theyve shown the least vibes compared to inserts and the rk upper solid mount, plus they look much better.
I hate the way my car shakes... I will look into this idea of yours.
"Smoked"
ive got the TTR upper mount and the RK dog bone lower.. my car vibrates like mad at low RPM.. i dont like it.. im may get rid of the mount and return to stock.. the hole dash rattles like crazy.. sounds like my car is going to fall apart..

do you have tranny mounts too?
wow... i just dont get it. i had rk sport upper and lower engine mounts and mark pain tranny mounts in my 5spd car, the vibes were barely noticable.
i just got my auto car running again, had the rk lower installed alone for a summer, no vibes whatsoever... installed the TTR upper mount and they got noticable, but by no means "unbarable" i actually kinda like it, gives the car a better feel if you ask me.
hmmm, maybe some cars vibe more than others? maybe the 2200 vibes more... who knows.
i say you guys need to not worry about such things, its hard to find a happy medium between 'performance' and a daily driver sometimes, but IMO... some of you are seriously i need of a reality check, u added solid engine mounts-what did you expect?
alex-good job and finding that 'happy medium' if you get better results than stock, without the vibes, great...
I had a upper mount in my old 2200.. It really didn't change the cabin resonation much if any.. Now, the lower mount.. That's just horrible..
Are you positive that it's strictly your upper mount?

hmm i just dont get it..i had rk upper, rsm lower and protane tranny and it really wasnt that bad for vibes cept maybe when your letting the clutch out but still in no means unbearable..maybe i am just used to crappy cars lol..phil

here here!!! hahaha, im thinking the same thing
Well.. I know from experience that the upper mount alone won't resonate a lot of vibration. It's the lower mount that produces that..

All I know is that the top insert was TIGHT going in (Had to pry with a wrench against the fenderwall with a wrench) Wrestled the thing out, shaved it and now its MUCH better.
zyaaaa I get your point, the main thing is I can afford to modify my car at age 18 simply because it still is my daily driver. Im not going after mad power or anything. Mildly modded with maybe at the most running a small VERY conservative turbo setup or something till I kill this motor and decide either the car or this motor has to go (many years down the line)

hmmm i might have to look into this. i haven't gotten the upper insert yet (and nah i dont want the ttr one), because i actually want a little bit of engine movement. i also dont want more vibes (currently running the mp lower mount, but i have an auto so vibes are worse). might just have to do this one.....

My TTR upper mount and Rk lower mount also vibrate the car like like crazy...sounds like a helicopter landing on my roof(no exageration). I have the auto though and it settles down some after the car warms up. My dash also had the notorious dash crack before the mounts were installed so I contribute that to a large amount of the noise. Im hoping I can raise the idle and smooth it out some with HPtuners. But the feeling of the car taking off like it does now compaired to the stock mounts is worth the vibes.
it just depends on what your used to. when i had the old motor in i never got the lower mount because riding in cars that had the lower mount the vibration made you feel like the car was just a big piece of crap. sounded like it was falling apart. others didnt think it was that bad and would deal with it. its just some people have diffrent opinions of what a driveable car should feel like, neither are wrong.

ya kno, i never really knew that the auto would have more vibes until i installed my TTR upper mount, i had my idle raised from 600 to 800, and the vibes are def. noticable, but certainly not to the point if somebody that never rode in it before would think the car is falling apart. i wonder how bad they'l get with the addition of the TTR auto tranny mount...and i also wonder how they will be once TTR realeases their lower 2.4 mount as well-i bet it would be less than the rk lower mount is.
so hopefully having ALL the TTR mounts on an auto wont shake the car into the ground, lol... im pretty anxious to see how it takes off now with the upper installed though, the car actually does the "front end pull" when u rev it up now... lol
a little back from the dead with a little update for you guys:
so remember, i have the mark pain lower mount. i bought the upper insert with the intention of getting rid of the large amount of kickback that the upper mount allows under full accel or decel.
at first, i ground down a little bit of upper insert i bought to make it fit a little better. i took the car for a ride and the vibes weren't too bad, except that i could now see my whole dash literally jumping up and down about 3/4". opened the hood, and the engine looked like it wanted to jump out. after seeing that and driving around some more, i knew this was not gonna be good. so i took it back out (that was interesting), and basically ground down half of each of the sides, so now the insert was pretty damn thin. reinstalled it, and now i have something that allows free engine movement, yet doesn't have the space anymore to have that large kickback. whoever has installed this and seen the amount of space between the housing and the rubber itself knows what i'm talking about.
the benefit? i'm back to the normal amount of vibes and dash movement that i had with just the lower mount. comfort > performance in this case, and it was only 18 bucks

some people have differences because between auto and manual cars the rpms at idle are different, so vibes will be different, i have the ttr upper, dogbone lower, and the ttr trans mounts, also i have hptuners and have set my idle to 900 and the car feels great. when my car was an auto and the idle was at 600 the car shaked like crazy, but i had no prob with it kinda liked it
i agree that the autos idle makes a big difference, i had upper. lower and tranny mounts not to mention the a arm and sway bar bushings all in urethane on my 00 Z24, i never noticed any major viberations that weren't there even when it was all stock, so i would lean more towards the auto trans and the 2200 engine being the main cause. The only big difference i noticed after these were all instaled was obviously the torque and it seems like it made the clutch engauge alot smoother. But as i stated before that was was all a 2.4 5 speed
yup, autos definitely feel it alot more. so in driving today, first - second shift seems to jerk less.

Did you guys not read the descriptions of these products. I mean it stops the engine from moving, the vibrations are going to go somewhere, but it's worth the sacrafice. Almost all "performance" parts have side effects on daily drivability and comfort. You guys should come to the forums every once in a while and read what they are before you buy a performance part just to say you got it.
i hope that wasn't your lame attempt to try to pwn us. especially me.

Did that sound rude? Didn't want it to, but I don't understand why you would spend money on a product to do something and then turn around and try and get the performance part to act like an OEM part.
hmm....i fail to see where this acts as an oem part. yes, it does act LESS than what it was intended to. but the definition of modding your car is for you to do something the way YOU like it, so that means if you have the know how to modify something that you've bought, then by all means, to satisfy YOUR own taste. this is why people modify brand new body kits, hoods, rims, engine mods, etc.
