Ok I bought a '95 Cavalier LS Convertible on Fri. While I was @ the dealership & the salesman told me it wasn't a Z24 I was a lil saddened but I really wanted a Cav 'vert so I accepted the fact. We moved on & I popped the hood to find, tah dah, a Quad4 2.3L DOHC motor, the Z24 motor for that year. I was initially excited but as I started to do more research I can't really find any consistant info on this motor. I have quite few questions any info is greatly appreciated.
#1. I am not too familiar @ all with the OBD1/OBD1.5 system, I mainly deal with Ecotecs. How could I find out which one it is?
#2. I have been told to swap in a Quad4 HO. In a OBD2 car that wouldn't do much because the computer tune is really what really accounts for the added power, most of the time.
#3. I want to boost the car how the hell do I tune it. No HP Tuners for pre-'97 J's. Is there other tuning solutions for pre-OBD2 cars?
#4. Is there anyway I can fit a Getrag F23, or comparible, to this thing. The Izusu has the gayest gear ratios in the world.
#5. Is Mantapart a bad company to order from I've heard a mix of things about them & also where else can I get parts for this motor?
It beats a Honda!
#1. I 90% sure 95 is OBD1 System
#2. Swap a Quad4 HO in your 95 should not be a major problem. Get a new e-prom chip, and some nice W41 cams. An HO stock motor will make more power than a stock 2.4 motor with the same tune. How does OBD2 come into this equation?
#3. Stand alone, reprogram your computer because it is a 95.
#4. I not big on manuals, I'm an auto guy. I don't know.
#5. In my personal opinion, I would only deal with Mantapart, if you can not get the part elsewhere.
Carcustoms, Turbo tech racing, summit racing, Jbodyperformance, rksport, A plus performance, jegs...just to name a few, and are not in any order.

Ok, since its a manual, its an OBD1 system. Probably nothing on it thats OBD2 other than the ALDL. This means you can do the HO quad swap without issues from the computer, and in fact the engine would run on the stock computer chip no problem.
Since you want boost, I would skip the HO quad, and find an older LO quad. Its compression ratio is better for a budget boost application, the oiling system is much better than a 2.4 and no balance shafts. Same as the HO, it will bolt right in and run fine.
As for tuning, since the car is OBD1, the PROM chips are burnable. I have my own burner setup for my 95 and its worked out great so far. You can do tuning for boost that way.
Trans issues can be taken care of with an Older getrag swap, the NVT 550. Will bolt in easier than the F23 and is stronger too. Realy the gearing isn't much different between all 3 trannys, so I don't know how you want to improve on it.
Mantacrap = the suck. Just stay away.

Ok well do any of these companies offer create engines. Me & my boy Jerry rebuilt his Ecotec & it was a bitch I really don't want to have to go thruogh that again. I just wanna buy the motor already built for boost & ready to go.
It beats a Honda!
Correction : The 95 LO engine DOES have balance shafts.
I've got a Turbo Log manifold for a 3rd Gen Equiped with a 2.3, that I might be selling.....along with a down pipe.
There are a few JBO Members here that could probably build you a decent Boost Ready 2.3, for a decent price.
I also have the tuning and burning software for the OBD-1 setups (like CavFan, who has helped me with my HO 95 Z24)

^^ thats why he said to use OLDER Lo motors...
anyway..glad to see you got a good car

a convertible WITH a quad 4 !
your car is chippable so no HPT needed..your best bet for transmission as stated above is the 92-94 5speed getrag that came with the HOquad..very little modification to make it fit...as far as a crate motor...hm..to be honest..if you want a built motor its sooo much easier to just put a 086 head and valve train on an LO short block and run the boost! mantapart is kinda shady..sometimes they work sometimes they dont...
Ok well what compression ratio will that yield?
Ok so I'm sold @ want to do the older LO bottom end & put the HO head on it. Now should I forge the internals in the process or should the stock bottom end hold up to my 250whp goal?

I'm running the Isuzu in both of my Quad 4 equiped Cavs..... not that they are awsome transmissions, but I have a few of them laying around.
Tuning software is TunerCat and TunerPro...... the chip burner/reader came from Moates.com I think...... or just have CavFan burn you some proms....... he's a good guy, and has fair prices.

if you get forged internals then your defeating the whole purpose of using the LO bottom end..the LO has 9.5:1 comp. compared to the 10:1 of the HO..if your gonna break the bottom end down and rebuild with forged internals then it doesnt matter which one you use...same crank..same block..on all of them
Does the LO DOHC use the same bottom end as the SOHC or are there some differences? Next weekend I'm gonna begin my search for my shortblock.
It beats a Honda!
unless im mistaken..and if i am someone please correct me..but as far as i know ALL "quad4" labeled engines have the same bottom end, with the exception of the 1995
Ok let me rephrase this because I may have said the wrong thing. Does the LO DOHC use the same pistons as the SOHC? I want to make sure I get the best everything I can get I did a few searches on Quad4forums.com but they all say "LO & SOHC suck, W41/HO is king" so I can't get any decent info from there.
It beats a Honda!
LOL @ ^ yea..w41/HO own all ...Lo's suck because they dont make much power on their own..thesohc's REALLY suck because theyre top end ALWAYS fails ...ive never seen one that didnt have a cracked head ...but like i said the bottom ends SHOULD be exactly the same..including the pistons..the only thing differnt on the HO bottom end is higher compression pistons..other wise they are the same as well
Kool thanks appreciate all the info. I'm a lil' pissed @ myself right now though. Got drunk last night, woke up this mornN to get ready for work feeling like @!#$ & I decided I was gonna drive my coupe. So I open the door on the 'vert start it up, pause to say "man I'm never drinking again" & proceed to reversing out the driveway. DAMN I didn't close the door so it got caught on the gate & now it rubbing the fender. So that sucks big monkey balls I'm hoping this won't affect the money for my motor.

BUT early Q4 LO will put down more power than a LD9....... but less TQ.
heres my build list for my GTZ,
086 head
10.5:1 pistons
New GM W-41 cams
GM Rockit Parts ECM
And drive it every damn day so i can build my Z24
