alright so iv been searching around and im kind of confused. the guy at foster autoparts said that if i swap a 2001 2.4l into my 99z the intake manifold needs to be swapped.. is this true?? everytime i come across an aftermarket intake manifold it says 96-2002.. so i dont see what the difference is. im picking up the motor today and bringing it to my mechanic so i need to find out asap. any help will be appreciated thanks.

The guy at foster is wrong. He is right that there are two different manifolds, but the 99' (at least for all J-bodies) is the same as the 01' intake manifold.

The difference is that 96-98 heads have an EGR valve in the head, and 99-02 ld9's don't...So regardless, the 01' motor won't have an EGR and you wouldn't use a 96-98 manifold anyways, unless you also swapped in a 96-98 head.
