ok folks im looking for some opinions, hopefully backed by knowledge/fact (i know, i know its JBO) on air filter media...ie: K&N style gauze, stainless steel mesh, foam. we all know paper sucks so lets skip that. stuff like flow rates, filtering efficiency, durability, etc. from the claims ive read the steel mesh should be the best, good flow, good filtering, no oil, just wash, dry n go. however all claim thier media to be the best....so what do you guys think?

Foam is crap, both the K&N and the new Dry filters are good from what I understand though. But yea, foam is crap, put that on your car and I'll beat you to death with your own arm.
There will always be someone faster than you, but thousands slower and dumber than you.
right now i have a K%N typhoon intake, obviously with one of thier style filters. im thinkin i may get an ractive heat sheilded filter, which has the steel mesh media. my gf's malibu (2.4tc) has an apc stainless mesh filter n seems to do fine, i havent found any dirt inside the intake, so it appears to filter well. some oil n gum/gunk...damned crankcase ventilation. lol.
on the note of foam...one of the major japanese tuners uses it...greddy i think. however, i doubt ill ever use it.

I could be wrong but personally I doubt that the steel mesh could filter as small of particles as oiled cotton can. I'm sure that it would flow better though - but if you have large enough of a oiled cotton filter to flow everything you can use then that point is null and void. Screw foam filters. I'm just gonna stick with oiled cotton filters for extra piece of mind.
I've never heard of this "part throttle" before. Does it just bolt on?

Foam has been around for years, and it sucks ass on muscle cars. I've seen engines suck the foam right into the carb... wonderful stuff it is... It's too restrictive, shove a piece of foam infront of your face and try to breathe, it doesn't work too good.
On another note, those heatshield filters are garbage too, all that heatshield does is restrict airflow and cause it to enter the filter in smaller spaces--besides, that plastic eventually gets hot, and heats up the air just like the intake tube gets hot and heats up the air... junk imho.

idea behind me using the heat sheild filter is laziness/time savings.
im looking to get some colder air to the filter. im gonna run some tubing to the intake hole in the fender, possibly all the way to the fog light hole in the bumper. i figured its easier to use a filter with the shield already on it than to spend the better part of a saturday or sunday fabricating a cool air box around the filter. though a custom box would be a nice touch...
i have wondered about the hole in the heat sheild being big enough, then again im luck if my car with its current mods is making even 150hp, so its not like im pulling alot of air.
who knows, im still in the planning stages, im also gonna price material for a box vs a new filter, and let that factor into the decision as well. im sure youll say the box is a better idea, and im kinda thinkin the same way myself...

Well the conclusion I came to is the more surface area of filtering media the better.
See the size difference.

and here is the finished product.

and installed in the car

FORGET GIRLS GONE WILD WE HAVE GOVERNMENT SPENDING GONE WILD!
yeah ive heard that as well, however, being as im not making my own intake, i have to put the filter in the place they (k&n) intended, and im limited in size. the one they provided is pretty good in size, and id say more than sufficient considering the generally low output of my car. i just need to get it some cooler air. im in Florida, and our ambient outdoor temps are getting into the 90's, i can just imagine what the underhood and intake temps are.
looks like im gonna build the box and keep the current filter. may pick up a spare hood and do some venting as well.
