Difference between 96-98 and 99-02 2.4 header?
Wednesday, June 13, 2007 10:43 AM
Hey, this is probably a stupid question, but what (if any) difference is there between the header for these years of 2.4? Some places I see listing simply just as 96-02 (or 01), and others (specifically, Pacesetter and Isuzu) list different headers for 96-98 and 99-02. Are they interchangeable or is there a slight difference that should be noted when looking at headers.

Specifically, I'm wondering if a Isuzu header off of a 2000 (for a 99-02) will work on my 98.

Brainstorm...is it something to do with EGR? I forget who has it and who doesnt...

Yup, the 99+ dont have the egr hole thingie. There could be other reasons, but im not sure.

^^^^ that is it. Truly you can use a 96-98 header on a 99+, the gasket is the difference that counts.

So you can use a 96-98 header on a 99+, but not the other way around? I'd take that to mean that the Tsudo/OBX headers are basically made for the 96-98 (with EGR) and the different gasket takes care of covering up the EGR on the 99+ models?

Just don't want to make a mistake and end up with a header that wouldn't work right.

yup the 96-98 can be used on the 99-02 , but gotta use the stock gasket to block the hole

but why not order the correct header from gravana tuning , or turbo tech

the tsudo/obx is made with cheap stainless , plus they dont come ceramic coated , which helps keep under hood temps down

I just ran into the same problem...

Ordered an OBX header (was very cheap) that was listed 95-01, and once it came, the box said 95-97...

It looks the same as others I've seen that fits the 99, however it has the small pipe coming off of one of the main pipes (for EGR I assume)

It was my intention to buy a stock gasket, so I guess it will solve my problem

You need Pacesetter Part number 72C1277 (Ceramic) or part number 70-1277 (painted)

We have these in stock also.

Dont get OBX, the stainless is cheap, this is why we dont carry this manufacture.

To bring this back from the dead...

It would work to use a header for the later 99 - 02 2.4 on a 96 if you were going to remove the egr ?

Pre 99 has an egr. You can use a pre 99 header on a 99+, just use a 99+ gasket to cover the egr. To use a 99+ header on a pre 99 motor, you need to cut a groove in the flange with a grinder or something, or you could delete the egr.

would deleting the egr cause any problems with the way the car runs, (computer or performance)?

That's pretty debated, you'll probably notice a tiny drop in gas mileage. I'm more familiar with tuning on obd1 gms, and I know in that case you can remove one without incurring performance issues. I don't know if the obd2 car would go into limp mode or not, I doubt it though. And if you know anyone with HPTuners they can probably shut the egr valve off.

As for the header, if you have a die grinder and some tools you could grind a groove into the header flange going from cyl 4 to the egr port. I've heard of a couple people doing this.

Personally I actually have an EGR header on my 99 Z24. Reason being, I got a super good deal on it. $120 shipped for a brand new pacesetter coated header is worth it not being totally correct. Especially in that situation requiring only the 99 style gasket to remedy the issue.
