which is better an aem cold air intake or a weapon r ram air?
cold gets more power 1hp or so not notisible
but it will have to be cleaned about every 2 month
i had my ram in for 6 month and it is clean as new
this is a stupid question.... first of all everyone claims to get different results, i was told when tested n put on the dyno a short ram did get a tad more of a HP gain than a long ram. i myself would go with the short ram because really there is no big difference between the both when coming to HP gain and a short ram would just be easier to install and you dont have to worry about sucking in water and stuff with the cold air. Although up here in Saskatchewan we just had a little dump of rain and in the city cars were stalling in the middle of flooded out intersections... that is when i would hate to have a cold air
cold air is long ram
warm air is short ram
your not gonna notice any difference between the 2. plus in the summer, your not gonna get any cold air in there anyway unless if its nice out.
I want to share something with you - the three sentences that will get you through life. Number one, 'cover for me', Number two, 'oh, good idea, boss', Number three, 'it was like that when I got here.'
Hold up, short rams have more hp when it is dynoed because they have the hood open and a fan blowing in.
In reality, the hood is down, the engine bay is hotter than hell and the hp is way less.
I have heard people losing hp from short rams.
CAIs are the best.
Ram air works depending on the unit's location and what speed you are going.
You also have to keep in mind that once the car is actually moving, cooler air will be passing through your engine bay, cooling everything down (think - idling kicks the crap out of an engine with heat, forcing the fan on continuously). And pavement in the summer can get VERY hot, and though conduction will pass that heat to a CAI.
True, you can't rely on closed system dynos, but you also can't rely on testing both back-to-back either as external conditions will play with your results.
My suggestion? Move to Canada where the air is always cold, you can park next to my igloo

exactly...they are fine for street use and good for road courses but they SUCK at a drag strip. After sitting in the staging lanes for 15 minutes your underhood temps are very high, and when you run you get to the end of the track before the cooler air gets circulated underhood.
Best overall set-up...short ram with a heat sheild/cool air box and either ducting to bring in outside air or a scoop/vent in the hood near the filter. you get the intake air temps of a CAI with the eas of install and water safety of a short ram. AND...if you 1/2 crafty a custom air box for people to oooh an aah over. or a functional hood scoop/vent...mmmm...functional body mods...so rare in the sport compact world...

Go with the Short Ram..Less chance of Water Damage..It is easy to clean..Not a lot of HP differance..Also if you keep the stock air box in the fender when you are driving this will still force some more air into the engine bay...Also Cold air intakes sit in the front bumper and when siting in traffic for some time pavement will heat up as bad as air in the motor compartment...Power differance you will not get in your car and be like wow that feels like a big power gain..Get rid of the factory one and it will wake it up and make more Nosie.I am running the K&N Typhoon and the fit and finish is great spend the money and buy somthing good..Also If you are out at the drags and worried about heat while siting in staging..Bring people to push the car to the line..And go buy a cooler and fill it with ice..Take 2 garbage bags and dubble them up..Put ice in there and wrap it around the intake and if you can get some around the actual intake runner..Then when it is race time remove ice and go racing...

in order for that to actually do anything, you need to be going faster than what a cav or fire can go. so its useless anyway

Cold air intakes will always have cooler air coming in than a warm air intake.
Warm air intakes can have as much as a 30-40 degree hotter air from under the hood than the 5-10 degree a cold air will have when you're sitting at a traffic light.
Even when you go down the road and everybody thinks that you're still getting cooler air under hood because you're in motion, you're not.
I've taken readings of 15-20 degrees hotter temps under hood with a wai when running down the highway. With the cai, it's not more than one to 3 degrees difference.
How do I know this?
I did a three month test of the difference of the two and when it was all done with, stuck with the cai that I have today.
Also, with everyone saying that you're going to get water damage with a cai, totally wrong.
If you're stupid enough to go through water so deep as to submerse the filter completely into water, then it's your fault.
In 7 years of having my cai, have never encountered water damage of anykind.
Here's some of the rains we get where I live and have driven in this kind of rain at 60+ mph on the highway with confidence.
Here's a pic of me pulled over because of the rain being so heavy.
Get the cold air or get the short ram with a cold air box to keep out the engine heat.
They both work good in keeping the air temp down.
Also, it's true that you have to clean your filter more often but I'd rather have the benefits of cooler outside air than having to deal with hot, underhood air.
When at the dragstrip, cai is the way to go.
Good luck with your decision.

Thank you Dave and JBO!

Well, i recently cut my aem cai into a WAI. Hptuners read a constant 138* IAT temp with the wai in city driving. during the freeway it would drop down gradually to 103*. this was at night where temps were 77* outside. i never read anyting lower. with the cai extension put back I had 104* temps during city driving and freeway temps were 90*. at wot it would end up being 82*. justs a heads up.
