L61 shortblock??
Sunday, July 01, 2007 4:11 PM
so i HAVE done some searching on this and i cant seem to find $hit...
I am looking for a pre-made shortblock with a mild/heavy build...is there a company that makes something like this?? When we build my brothers honda we had all kinds of options/companies to choose from, but i have a feeling that this market just doesn't exist yet, or isnt is high enough demand...any help would be appreciated
oh and im new so welcome me!!! Dont flame, i know how forums work
I have a 2005 Base model Cavalier that i just payed off...so its mod time! It is a 5 speed with a Megan Racing Cat-back and a Weapon R WAI (makes the car sound MEAN), I have also installed Ground Control coilovers with a Eibach Anti-roll kit... I just went to my first Auto-X event and did surprisingly well. I have 18" Excel wheels for the daily driver thing, and i just threw the steelies back on it for Auto-X (stock tires)

First of all, welcome! Not everyone here is interested in starting flame wars, especially if you've done your homework and ask intelligent, informed questions. (Of course, there are some who are quick to grab the torch when they smell a n00b...)

IMO, the aftermarket for these cars really isn't that bad, although coming from a Honda, any other car is going to seem to have a weak aftermarket pretty much. The key is knowing where to look. If you haven't already, check out sites like www.gravanatuning.com, www.jbodyperformance.com, www.mantapart.com - there's others too, but those will give you a start in figuring out what's available (it sounds like you have a bit of an idea though as it is). Another good site, once you realize what to look for, is www.importperformanceparts.net (yeah, we don't drive an import, but there's quite a bit of stuff there for us too).

Now for your specific question about the shortblock, there is one available from www.jbodyperformance.com (go there, then 3rd Gen Products > Machine Shop > Crate Engine Kits, then grab the lube...you'd be taking one up the tailpipe to buy one). A better bet might be to get a spare block from a junkyard or something similar and get one of the engine rebuild kits from www.importperformanceparts.net, and have the block built by a local shop. I have to imagine you'll come out a lot cheaper.

Coming from someone with an amazing amount of experience with the ecotec motor, I STRONGLY recommend building your own bottom end it will be cheaper...

yeah thanks for the info guys...i have been watching and reading from this forum since i bought my car, but never signed up cause i wasnt going to be able to mod until i payed off the car, and now that is accomplished i am ready.
I did look at mantapart and seen this...

2.2 Ecotec Turbo/SC engine- this is a completely built engine-with forged lower compression pistons, billet rods and race quality internals.
Full headwork and HD turbo cams and valve train. HD oil system mods and setup for a turbo drain down incorporated into the block already.
It is ready for your manifolds and turbo or SC- this is a bullet -proof engine!
This is the same engine Gm is making 1000+HP with and is a great engine for a turbo/SC project or a kit car conversion too.
(We can provide a RWD bellhousing for them now too) $3750 + truck frt.

Anyone used this motor or seen anyone use it? What kinda reviews? Problems with it? I had to laugh when i seen "this is a bullet -proof engine!"...no setup in the world is bullet proof without a great tune....and those are becoming hard to come by imho...

yeah ben i have been watching u for a little while now and i seen u at import wars #3
nice job on the ET and i like the mph too...not bad. Why did u run such low comp on a NA motor?
i was looking for a new block that i can break in on my own, and WAS looking for an easy/fast build
but like "Rich Grayo Jr." said i think that i am gonna build my own shortblock. I just picked up one of the build books from GM and i think i got a good grasp on what needs to be done...

I told you to build your own shortblock, lol

pick up an 05 engine, tear it down, get the lock heat tanked, bored if necessary, buy wiseco pistons, eagle rods new main and rod bearings, arp head studs and boom a bottom end that could handle 400 hp, possibly more dependant on head work

Scott,

Shoot me an e mail sales@carcustoms.net I have several different pistons in stock along with rods that I can cut a nice deal on and get them shipped out to you ASAP if needed be. Also, I have alot of other GM Racing products as well that are not listed on the website pending the type of build you are going after.

yeah i have been reading good things about Karo and his company, so i will definitely be dealing with him when the time comes, but its gonna be a little while cause i just dumped money into my motorcycle (got the head P&P) and its gonna be a while before i can come up with anything close to what i need to do that... but looking ahead i need to start thinking about options for a Valve train...

I am selling my motor if you are interested it is the motor THAT RAN A 11.94 @115mph.
I have been up to 121mph on this motor but tunning was my problem so those were my only 12.10 and 12.00 passes.

Compression is 195-190-190-190 on it respectively and it has about 25K street driven on it.
I am willing to let it go for very cheap so if you want a motor that will take 400whp this on is for you.

I have also built motors for guys on the ORG and you can ask about me I have been around for 7 years now.
