LD9 4340 forged crank update
Friday, July 06, 2007 5:51 AM
Hello all I recently emailed Eagle and asked them to build us LD9'ers a 4340 forged crank and their first reply was a flat out NO " there isn't a market to support us going to the trouble". To which I responded " how many cranks would it take for you to justify building it" and there response is " 40 cranks per month for 36 months at a cost of $600 - $650 each " which is 1440 cranks total.

So put the word out if we can get that many people interested with money in hand we can finally get a reasonably priced 4340 forged crank for our engines. You can either email Eaglerods directly or email me and I'll forward the emails to them, lets do this.

It will never happen.
They tried to politely tell you no. I guess you missed it.
It would be great to have this option, I just do not see it happening.
Also, I know of no one that actually needs one. Our stock cranks a very strong.

u could always ask to see what it would take for them to make just one.

im guessing the cost would be around $5000.

Pfft... I'd like to see them be able to pump out 40 cranks a month for 36 months straight.

Pump out meaning make them or pump out meaning sell them? Making would be simple... 1 order to China warehouse for 2000 pieces and it will show up in 6 weeks selling them is another issue. I dont think they could sell 100 in 3 years to begin with...

Its pointless if b/c you won't need a 4340 forged crank. If you need a crank that strong, you would be ready to fork out the money needed for one on your own.

Doesn't gm rank our crank to handle 500 hp at the crank?

It handles anything anyone has ever thrown at it, to my knowledge no one has ever broke one.

as long as were on this, how many have broken stock connecting rods? every one seems to be so in love with replacing them, but is it really needed?

hell, all GM did back in the day with the RP parts rods was shot peen them.

It's a shame to find out that Eagle was right about most of you LD9 owners that you would not support them making a 4340 forged crank. And as for Shawn McKinzie's comment " that if I needed a crank that strong I should be willing to fork over the money myself instead of asking others for help" I'd bet I've got more money in my motor and turbo setup right now then you do in your whole car. So if I wanted to spend $1500 -$2000 on a billet crank I could have but that's not the point, I was trying to help out ALL LD9 owners who might want an all forged bottom end, because lord knows I've seen the question of forged cranks come up a few times. And for all of those who say " no one ever broke a stock crank" how many have ever tried to make 500 + whp/wtq, again I'd bet not many. Most of you seem to be happy and satisfied with 300 whp or less so you don't see the need for a forged crank. And for me it's more of a peace of mind thing, knowing I can go for max whp/wtq/rpm without worring about breaking the crank.

This is the last time I try to help this community, from now on I'll just work on things for myself.

trying to sell 1500 cranks, for 600 bucks is helping?

are you the only one to have done this before?

get off your damn high horse. your not all mighty because you THINK your TRYING to make high HP.

300 HP in a cavalier, is alittle much for other things for it, like breaks. did you upgrade them yet, you must have with your vast knowledge.

Eagle was right about us LD9 owners. We are not stupid enough to waste money on a crankshaft when we will never need it. I do not know why you thought there was a market for it. Just because some newb asks the ? does not mean we need it. You were not helping us out by trying to get a crank made that we do not need.

Before you worry about the crank dont forget about the timing chain area.

X2

For all anyone knows, the stock crank may handle 700hp safely.

I know of one who did... and on a stock crank at that

But I know of hundreds on here who THINK they can do it and never ever do.
