Intake install
Friday, July 06, 2007 5:05 PM
Just getting ready to install my rdfabs intake here and I noticed that some of the other cars are using a filter on there valve cover.

As outlined in the picture. What kind of filter is it and what do I need to know when I go out to purchase one?

There at most parts stores on the ricer aisle. Dont have to be a genious....it simply slides on the pcv valve and you tighten the hose clamp. Its a breather filter for the crankcase ventalation. Your factory setup has a hose running from the valve to the air inlet/intake tube.

I have been for a while now....and you can actually run your car without even a filter....but its not the smartest....a lot of racecars dont use filters, but they arent being driven everyday. But i can tell you from persnal experience Ive driven my car without both filters and it ran just fine with no problems.......BUT IM NOT TELLING YOU TO DO THIS!!!! LOTS OF THINGS CAN HAPPEN...BE WARNED

One bad thing about those things is you have to be more diligent in keeping the engine bay clean. They tend to mist oil in there and it gets all over, especially the valve cover and underside of the hood.

I never cared for that method of crankcase ventilation, it just reminds me of the road-draft tube that was so widely used before PCV. You probably never heard of that because you'll usually not see outside of a pre-'60s concours restoration. There was a reason CARB pushed to get away from it... SMOG! Aside from that if you do install one it should go where the tube from the factory air-inlet tract went, not on the PCV valve. Otherwise too much crankcase pressure will build up and you willhave oil all over the place! Note to boost builders: Investigate positive crankcase ventilation.

Oops, strike part of that. I just rembered Greg is right about where to put it. Silly me forgot how the crankcase ventilation flows on the LN2. Sorry, just to accustomed to the layout on old design engines. Still don't forget that word on crankcase evacuation!
