Well I finally thought I was about done with this whole project today, as I brought my car up to Excessive Autosports in Sioux Falls, SD. Boy what the hell was I thinking when I thought that something would actually go smoothly with the car. Everything was just fine as we welded up a wideband o2 bung on my cav, it lacked a 2nd o2 sensor for some weird reason that nobody knew. But that went just fine. We hooked up the laptop and were ready for a day of powah making...... Instantly HPT found something it didn't like, my a/f ratio? no... my timing? no... my cars color? no... it obviously doesn't like MEXICANS.
Well, more specifically, my mexican type jbody. I guess my car was meant to go south of the border for its life, but somehow it wound up in freaking Sibley, Iowa in my garage. My car's vin number starts with a 3G, this means that it is a Mexican cavalier. American cavaliers start with 1's, and canadian cavs start with 2's. HPT has absolutely no problem tuning American and Canadian cars, but it has something against MEXICAN cars. This is why my car only has one o2 sensor..... How random is that? I finally think I am done with this lame shat, and then it turns out my car is freaking mexican, and can't be tuned by HPT.
I atleast got a baseline run, with my horribly untuned car. It put down a respectable 165 whp with the stock rev limiter and everything. No torque numbers at this time however. The guy at the shop said my car is in a desperate need of a tune, and will definately pick up quite a few more ponies once we are able to tune it. In order for me to tune the car I went to the local salvage car and picked up an ECU from an american 99' cavalier. This also has issues with my car. I can't seem to get the car to keep running. It starts for a second, then dies. It is the stupid theft mechanism in the computer disabling my car from running. Does anybody know how to fix this? I have been trying the turn the car on for 15 seconds, then off, then on again etc, and it is not working. I have some pics, and a video from the dyno that I will post later.
sucks man but nice run still

N/A MEXICANESS!
truly a wicked bad day man

from the flat tire on the grand prix, to the HPT lack of mexican ability, to driving all over bum f ck egypt trying to find a computer, to the damn 99 VCM not working properly.
165whp ON A STOCK TUNE is definatly NOT n/a sadness. i believe im n/a gladness its still worthy of n/a madness
you also forgot to mention with the STOCK injectors it was having AFR #'s of 15:1 and with the ford brown tops a 10:1. no hapapy medium-either rich as hell or lean as hell.

a mexican jbody lol thats funny as @!#$
I wonder whats in the mexican computers that HP tuners wont work?
I got the 99 computer to work. Horribly stupidly simple. Just try and start it, let it die, wait 10 minutes and start it up. I wish I would have known that when i was at the FREAKING DYNO SHOP. Oh well.
sucks to hear you had so many problems.....
I hope you get it all sorted out, and get it tuned..... then hit the dyno again. You've got to beat my 171hp

Yes it can... I have tuned quite a few including my own that is a Mexican. Will it let you read the file at all? Sounds like you may have another problem (IE Ground) ..

Now that really pisses me off. The people at excessive charged me for my 2 pointless dyno runs too, and I ran out and bought a new PCM for nothing..... However the guy did email HPtuners website and they replied that it can't tune mexican cars

This is such a freaking mess.
Here are some photo's, a video will be uploaded also to my Photobucket account. I will provide the link so you can view, it never seems to work when I link the video directly.....
The owner's NSX
also cavattack, he was able to read what was going on with my engine, just not change anything.
so does anybody know if the new AMERICAN vcm that does for sure work now will be able to be tuned? i know p&p tuning says you can tune the mexi, but i was there... the guy said several times it was not possible. is there some trick needed to be typed in or something to get the 'mexican' one to tune?
My little Mexican Cavalier has been tuned with HPT without issue. If i had any experience with the software perhaps I could help you figure out why you were having issues, but alas I don't.
Oh and they never built Js in Canada...only 1 and 3, no 2s.

and thats just where the car was built, not where it was destined to be for its life
The guy said that he couldn't license the vehicle, because it didn't recognize his vin number. The guy then claimed that he emailed HPT and they said that it couldn't be done. If it can't be done, why can you guys do it?
165 is really good untuned. I really hope everything gets worked out. NOW FIGURE OUT THE DAMN CR!!!!!
cars running with the new 99 ecu so should be good. better anyway.
165 seems pretty decent untuned
also u can turn VATS off with hpt so u will never have that theft issue

but i guess mr. tuner at the shop doesnt know too much about hpt... so id look into someone that knows what they are messing with vs. having someone not be able to figure out how to even get it to register to ur car... good luck man cant wait to see how she does
time to bring the car up to Team GREEN for a good tune.

just need to make sure you have a wideband before you do.
lol.... why does it seem that so many cavalier owners don't know they have passlock, and/or don't know how to "relearn" it?
I don't see how a 99 can NOT have a 2nd O2 sensor.... secondary O2 is MANDATORY as per OBD2 regulations because the ecu HAS to have some way to monitor catalytic converter efficiency.......
Anyway, 165 with your high compression build and no tuning is not a bad starting point at all... Hopefully this new ecu will work out for you.

I don't think he did.... If he could read it, he should have been able to tune to it. My guess is he did not license the vehicle. Also, HPT support usually does not email back right away. It can take a few hours or even a few days. The car being a Mexican should have nothing to do with it. Just means it was built in Mexico, they all have the same PCM. Same thing with the Canadian covertibles.

Pauls car is a 97, with only one o2 sensor, the 99' ecu prolly was made for a car with two. The second o2 sensor is worthless to him anyways, he has no emissions equipment on the car really anymore.
