Suggestions for further mods on the daily driver? Shifted Tuning?

Hey everyone, I don't normally make posts like this but I'm bored and drunk so what the hell? Anyways to skip the registry check my DD is a 99 Z24 5 speed. I've got intake, header, 2.5" exhaust, unorthodox udp, all the prothane mounts, a spec stage 1, and a funny raised compression do to slight head shaving and block surfacing(about 245psi per cylinder). The fuel rail also has an adjustable fpr on it, which I have no idea where its set because it deleted the schrader valve. That was a mod by the previous owner... I could say a lot about that. Also in the garage I've got an ho mani and tb, along with the Fontana adapter. I'll add to that later.

Anyways, I've got the itch to spend a bit more money on this car because it needs just a bit more. It pulls incredible gas mileage, usually 36mpg on the highway, and about 30 in town if I granny it. I just feel like for the mods I've done to it thus far that it doesn't pull hard enough. I haven't been to the strip with it since like 04, so I have no real basis of where it stands.

With that being said, sorry for my drunkness. I don't want to pay for the full HPTuners set up, mostly because I personally have no experience with tuning nor do I have a laptop or WB02. But I also think that the computer is probably restricting the car's performance. So would a computer tuned by Ron be a good bet? If so, Ron especially - what would be the options that you could do for me? I hate to get into playing games with my computer on my DD because it cannot have down time. Atleast not until spring of 08, at which time I'd like to have my spare head ported and a set of not so secret cams to put on it too.

So really, what should I do? Would a computer be a good bet now? Or should that wait, and if it waits what should I get?

Also, I'm kind of looking to do a dyno comparison of the stock intake and tb, against the ho intake + fontana adapter. Anyone else think that it is about @!#$in time for that? Me too. My timeline got pushed back into October, but it's looking like it will get done for sure.

Truely tuning would help, but not a mail away tune. You need to be on a dyno. DO some checking lots of shops have HPT and tune with it. YOu do not have to own it to get tuned with it.

John is right, to get the MOST from an NA tune you would need a dyno. Not to say that you wouldn't see gains with a mail order tune, most of my customers can definately feel a difference. The justification of cost is up to you. You don't necessarily need to have any down time if you buy a spare ECU and send that in. To see what can be done, read through the HPT site, download the help file, and read some of the FAQ's. Every person's setup is different.

I may be getting out of the mail order tuning business, its just not working out for me financially, and I'm too busy to take care of it. There are a couple other guys still doing it though.

It'd be great to see someone do this, finally. I haven't done the HO manifold yet but it's on my wish list as it seems, from what I've heard, that it's worthwhile. It would be nice to see how worthwhile it really is.

I say screw the cav, and throw a 3500 top end on your beretta

I would prolly do a 2.2 coil swap, which wouldnt realy add anything but since its your DD anything to help it run better/smoother would help. A dyno tune would be realy good if you wana shell out the cash. Have about nitrous? Or do you wana stay on just motor? Other than that it sounds like youve got a decent list for a DD and youll be opening up your head and using secret cams.

Id like to see a comparison of the manifolds and tb's though. Finally put an end to all the discussion about that.

Now we're talking icemike ! I just wish I could wrench on the ole Burrito right now as it is about 2 hours away staying climate controlled in my shop. As far as nitrous goes, its not for my daily beater. It would make it fast enough for sure, but I have to have this car on a daily basis to do anything called upon it. If I took it to the strip tomorrow and managed a low 15 with it I'd probably leave it alone mod-wise, but those times won't happen. So why not go above and beyond while we work? Keeping reliability and gas mileage as the key goals.

I am very interested in the 2.2 coil swap. I remember WrenchMonkey's post about TEAMGREEN wanting to make a kit, but whatever became of that? I haven't had many issues with the coil over plug set -up, but I definitely understand its short comings. So TG guys, what's the story?

Also, as far as tuning, I imagine obviously it would be more beneficial to wait until after the head and cams and then do a full tune. But I still want to do this intake comparison, I would go down in history as that guy that proved or disproved the ho manifold being a worthy swap with (michael) bolt-ons.

I want to see this intake comparison as well. Maybe even in person.

Know of any good dynos to visit in the dsm area Wade? I'd like to keep this venture as close to home as possible, doing so would get it done faster too.

thats funny, cause i ran a 15.095 1/4mi with a @!#$ reaction time with my 03 cav, and all i had on it was a fart can and a AEM CAI, oh and cheap ass stock tires, i love my eco

Who else does it?I was going to have you tune mine like Brad's but if your getting out of it...

I would highly recomend Lund Motersports in Waukee. It is about 10 miles west of DSM. I would not go to Midstate Machine.

I miss my 60*v6 I wish I coulda kept it and eventualy got a beretta or 2nd gen z to swap it in. Love your sig btw

I understand what you mean about the nitrous thing. There are many safe reliable kits to run, but it just kinda scares me going on a higher mileage dd. Thats the only thing keeping me from spraying yet...well that and money lol. I also want the tg coil swap, havnt heard anything about it though.

When do you plan to do the ho mani/tb swap?? Id like to see some numbers!!

Well, I actually ran back home (from school), and grabbed my ho manifold and tb and stuff. I also decided to cut a few of the mounting blocks off of it.

I'd like to have it on the car to be able to run at the track with it during the v6Z24/JBOI bash on 9/21. As for dynoing, that still a ways off. I want to be able to swap the manifolds in 15 minutes and have zero drivability issues between the 2 first just so I know I'll be able to make the most of my dyno time.

Its gona be a bit more difficult to do that in 15 mins if you plan to use tha adapter flange. You would have to swap out the studs/bolts and line up all the gaskets or rtv. Cut your brake booster beforehand and hook up some vaccum line to your stock brake booster location, and everything.

Ive done the swap before using a lo manifold and adapter flange, dropped .2 off my 1/4 times using my 58mm 2.4 tb; it will be good to see some actual numbers though. Im doing the swap again soon using a port matched ho manifold, which should be much easier and Ill have less a chance of leaks and all; plus it was a pita looking for the longer studs needed with the flange.

I was planning on going to the dyno with the HO manifold on first and running, and then switching back to the 2.4 set up to try and make the whole ordeal less painless.

I'm excited though, I finally have a garage at school this term and it's nice to be putting it to use. Garage time = happy no stress time.

Also, after sanding with 60 grit for an hour on this thing I really wish I would've done more at home with the air tools. I could ground the former molded chunks a lot more flat. I pretty much wore a weak spot in my sanding block. But it looks smoothish now, smooth enough to have a uniform look when painted I hope.

I cant wait to get my ported 2.3 manifold in. My 2.4 mani has like a hackjob somewhat porting on it cause I was bored lol, and one of my tb bolts broke off in it. I loved the lo manifold swap I did a few months ago, but had a small vaccum leak somewhere that annoyed the hell out of me so I got rid of it; hopefully I wont have any problems since this one will flow perfectly being portmatched. Ill be cutting some of the tabs off on it when I get it, I think it looks much cleaner that way.

Anyone want a ho manifold? I have one I dont need lol.
