you do realize its not a typical automatic trans on the cars with paddle shifters right? Its pretty much 2 manual transmissions in one case controlled electonically. Paddle shifters on a regular automatic is pointless.

i was just checking. haha
it would be cool though.

Re: paddle shift?

I have a modded 4 door, check my profile for build list......its not highly modded anymore, It used to be turbo'd

Re: paddle shift?
Wednesday, October 10, 2007 3:28 PM
are all the 2002 cav sedans with automatic tran have a 2.4 or do they have the 2200?
Re: paddle shift?
Wednesday, October 10, 2007 3:33 PM
no only a hand full are 4 door 2.4's w/ automatic. I dont know the exact number but there few and far between. and if you didnt have a 2.4 you had a 2.2 eco. 2.4's were only made for like 1/2 the year.

My ECU with the 4 slow-omatic option will have paddle shifter inputs if they are set up.

I saw an ad in a hot rod magazine for an electronically-controlled automatic system that had paddle shifters. It looked like a transmission controller with paddles to select gears.

this isn't necessarily true. the Audi/VW DSG is set up more or less like this, but Ferrari, Lamborghini, BMW, and Toyota use (more or less) regular manual transmissions with an automatic clutch and servos (or something) to select gears. Mercedes and Lexus use electronically-controlled, planetary-based torque converter automatics with shift buttons on the steering wheel, and the new 6-speed auto Corvette is set up with paddle shifters behind the steering wheel, but it's just a normal auto, like Mercedes and the others. Many companies (including, but not limited to Toyota, Mopar, and Hyundai) incorporate a manual selection position in the shifter for the regular electronically-controlled automatics; using paddle shifters for these would be about as simple as making the paddles and wiring them up. a couple of the companies that use CVTs (Mitsubishi and Nissan) have paddle shifters for the CVTs that allow the driver to toggle between preset ratios, to make it feel more like a normal gearbox.

bottom line, what the O.P. asked about is possible, and not even all that difficult, but IMHO, it is pointless (like Darkstars said). It's just a novelty. I suppose if you wanted to have something few (if any) other people have...

Um... yes it would.... Essentially it would turn your car into a 5 speed without the clutch.... At least it will in my version, completely taking the stock ECU out of the picture as far as shift points go.

Hey Leo,
I have seen and yes they do make a conversion for a paddle shifter for almost any electronic automatic. Check out Powertrain Control Systems if you have to have paddle shifters. You will however need the PCS trans controller $700, paddle shifter kit $500 and custom harness $150. Remeber this is just a conversion, it will allow you to change gears when you want, but it doesn't rev match downshifts like top end gearboxes do.

Not entirely true... I have a 2002 Cavalier LS Sport Sedan with a 2.2L ohv with an automatic tranny. For the first few months they made them with the 2.2L ohv, then switched to the 2.2L ecotec.

wow that news to me, I thought they either got a 2.4 or 2.2eco in 2002. so you got shafted in the engine department... lol

Some of the new Grand Prix's and a few newer Dodge's have what your talking about..

Grand Prix = paddle, Dodge= tap shift

There a joke... it's not any different then just selecting the gear manually on your regular automatic shifter. If you rdeline the car.. it will upshift automatically, and it won't let you downshift unless your going slow enough. You actually have more control just doing it with the stock gear selector.

The paddle shifters on new Porsches and Ferraries and cars like that... are another story.

I've seen that Powertrain Control Systems kit that jd soza was referring to. It was at a show somewhere, on a Sunfire. It was a company car tho... but i still humped it

As for the 02 cars... the usual ratio of 2.4L/2.2L Eco to 2200 happened as did in most previous years. The 2200 was available all year... it was the 2.4L that was deleted mid-year and replaced with the 2.2L Eco. That's when the Z24 in the USA was replaced with the LS Sport (here in Canada, it stayed the Z24). The 2.2L Eco didn't become "the only engine" until the 03 model year. So if you have an 02, you could have any of the three engines...

4-Speed, and it's still torque converter/ planetary.

Pontiac's is called Tap Shift, and mopar has another name for theirs

some systems will actually give you full control, even to the point of letting you bounce off the rev limiter, and not shifting until you tell it to, and most of the time, if it won't downshift, it's because it will probably cause damage to the engine and/or transmission to do so.

Ferrari's is different, but I think Porche uses a torque converter/planetary trans., even if you do have (almost) full control, like described above. see my post further up the page...

if youve ever shifted your auto trans with the shift on the consol, you already know you have the same redline. but when you hit it, it bounces. and it takes a second to shift so its hard to shift at the right time.
my butt dino says i pull faster in 1 or 2 b/c of the traction control going off or something. idk, it feels more solid.. but after i take off i throw it in drive so my trans can shift EXACTLY AT REDLINE.
plus, when decelerating in 1 or 2 the trans wont shift into neutural.

this is with my 4t04e trans as an example

Listen F***ers. FASTERTHANAHONDA is a joke because I WORK FOR HONDA. I'll talk @!#$ about Fords to, that doesn't mean I can beat a 12 second mustang.

You don't know much about my car, so I'll let you plead ignorance... I'm not talking about paddle shifts interfaced with the J-body PCM. I was referring to more of a standalone (with paddles for the convenience), where I wouldn't need the J-body PCM at all anymore.

It sounds like that system that jd soza was referring to is standalone. It better be for $1450. That's f---ing expensive.
IMO, your money would be better spent getting a real manual and learning to drive it right.
