99 cavalier header install

Ok so i have enough money to get the pacesetter header part for my 99 cavalier but all of the shops i have talked to around say it's going to cost close to 200 for the install. With christmas i'm short on money so how hard is it to do it on my own.

Woah, $200?
That's pretty cheap.

A lot of shops near me won't touch it since its on the rear side of the engine.

Its not too difficult.
Easier with an extra set of hands.

You'll actually probably have a tougher time removing the bolts off the factory header than anything.

Just follow the instructions, take it to your exhaust shop for the final welding of the down pipe.
And you'll be fine.

Remember to recheck the bolt/spring section after you've driven for a while.

i was also thinking about a high flow cat; how well will that help my current set up of cat back and intake minus the header?

Its all about the pipe size.
Whatever you decide, keep it all the same size.
2.25" cat back get a 2.25" cat and so on.

For reference, I don't have a header (although I've owed many)
My cat and catback are 2.5" (outside diameter because that's how pies are made.....GGRRRRRRR)
My auto dyno'ed 141 hp an 144 tq (I have other mods too but you get the idea)

Well it definitely not hard to install. I did mine by myself in my driveway with just handtools in about 90 minutes or so... though I grew up working on cars and have been working on them by myself since I was like 13...

In my opinion your tool selection will determine more than anything how easy this job will be for you. It takes a pretty sweet combo of extensions and deep well sockets to get at the downpipe bolts. Plus cutting the old exhaust is no picnic, luckily I had one of those chain style exhaust pipe cutters, but if you've got a sawzall then you're even better off. Just FYI though, the chain cutters can be rented at most parts stores for like $15 deposit.

You'll wan't to rais the back of the car all the way off the ground also to get the exaust to clear the rear axle if you plan on installing a cat-back with the header....

As far as cats go.... I put a magnaflow on my car..... I'de recomend one to anybody.... although cat replacemet is really more of a "matching to exaust" thing than a performance thing.

When I installed my Pacesetter header on my car... the hardest thing was trying to get the header to clear everything getting it into the car from the bottom..... and re-installing the dip stick tube was a pain too... but it's definatly doable.... I installed the headder using a regular box wrench wich took forever but I almost had too since the bolts are hard to get too.

You'll def run into some clearence issues installing it..... but it's def worth doing it yourself for the money you will save.... Just make sure it's tight..... follow the tightening pattern correctly and remember to recheck your downpipe bolts after a few days.

Headers for the 2.4 are a good desicion. I recently installed mine no problem. dont waste your money, do it yourself, its not hard at all. just make sure you can get under your car with enough room to move around, because your flange bolts will more than likely be corroded and rusted like little bitches. i had to cut 2 of mine out.

For those who didn't bother reading his profile, he has a 2.2l, the install isn't all that hard.

pipes are measured from the inside diameter until they get to 14" then they go by o.d.

thats such a general statement, how could that even be close to true. ur saying everyone in the world has the same standards... and also ur wrong go to any auto parts store, auto zone, advance auto, checker, look at their piping, they have both ID measured piping as well as OD piping even some thats measured one side ID and the other OD.

Tubing is almost always advertised by OD, then given a thickness where you can determine the ID yourself (i.e. 16 gauge)... unless you are referring to schedule piping used for plumbing, which you would still be wrong, because sch measurements for piping doesn't make any sense at all.
