Can 2.2ohv TB be bored to 59MM

I've read in the Forum, that you could take your TB to a machine shop and get it bored to 59MM, is that correct? Can it be bored that far, or do you have to start with 2.3 TB. Has anyone done this?

YES, it can be bored to 59mm. I wouldn't take it any farther if your still N/A

The machine shoppe will have to put a sleeve in the TB and will have to make you a new butterfly valve.....make sure you don't use yours!!!
Get one from the junk yard because it's very thin aluminum and has a chance of falling apart..like my first try.

Also you may need some JB Weld to go around the outside of the TB's intake...i think mine is 59mm and it ate through a bit so we had to do a little first aid to fix the air leaks from small openings.

Good Luck

If you are running N/A, you don't want to go over 56mm. You'll lose too much intake air velocity, killing your low end torque.

59mm is good for boosted applications though, less restriction on the air charge being forced into the motor.

Hi, I am going to bore my tb but here in Peru nobody seems to know how to do it, I measured it and is about 51mm (+-). I will keep N/A, so 56 mm is the top I can go right?. Do I need to use that "sleeve"? I know I need a bigger butterfly. And, exactly, which part I have to bore?, there is a big mouth that goes smaller until the butterfly, from there to the end is the same diameter. The tb structure can handle the reboring to 56mm?.

Thanks.

Sidney

You just bore out the center (where the butterfly is) to the desired size, and cut a new butterfly. There shouldn't be a need for a "sleeve".

Hmmm, I thought '92 was the first year of MPFI? Where's Slow?

You right, it was the first year of the MPFI or as it was called the Bottom Feed Port or BFP. I must have been a '91 Beretta I did the head job on a few years ago.

I'm trying to go 60MM with an OHV TB, I've got the butterfly allready made, lasercut is the only way to go, and I had to fill the vaccum ports with HD epoxy because I was worried about not having enough surface for the butterfly to seal. I'm gonna try it N/A and see what happens. If I loose top end, i've still got the stock 56MM to put back on!

92 is a strange year. It seems like I've seen both TBI and PFI engines from 92. J cars had a 2.0 OHV until 92, when the 2.2 was installed with PFI. Corsica / Beretta models got the 2.2 TBI in 90 and I believe they changed from TBI partway through the 92 model year.

The TBI unit has a tiny bore, I'd guess it's much less than 51 mm. Anyone wanting to open up one of those units to 59mm has their work cut out for them.

I wonder if the TB size recommendation would change for a car operated off road primarily above 5000 rpm?

If you figure I have a 55mm TB, which according to Event (IIRC) said flows 317 cfm. I have a +.75mm 2.2L turning 6250, I only need 245.2 cfm. Even at 110% it still only comes to 269.7 cfm it still doesnt reach the 129% flow that I have capability for! Of course you can use higher percentages for fuel injection, than if you were using a carb.

According to the "Auto Math Handbook" by John Lawlor theoretical cfm = rpm * displacement / 3456

Just some things to ponder.

I am sure my car is MPFI, so 56mm is ok right? What is a TBI anyway?. Thanks

Throttle Body Injection, single injector in place where carburetor might be found.
