I bought the stage one cams for my ecotec....The mechanis is saying I have to buy a tool to put them in and the tool is 300 dollars......He said the cams cant be put in unless I have the tool......has anyone heard of this tool and where can I buy it
your mechanic is full of ka-ka
you can buy the tool on ebay for like $100
basically it lets you change the cams without releasing the tension on your timing chain. It makes cam swaps VERY easy but its not necessary to do it.
cam swap without cam tool would take about 5+ hours
cam swap with cam tool takes about an hour or 2
plus with the tool, there is absolutely ZERO chance of messing up your cam timing. releasing the tension on the chain, you have to re-time the engine and make sure the marks on the cam gears and crank gear all line up. its a bit of a pain.. the cam tool makes it a LOT easier
