Do they make polyurethane tanks for the 95-99 cavs?

are you trying to cut weight?

if you are then get a fuel cell from jegs for in your trunk, that is probably the best that you can do.

of dont fill your tank before you go to the track?

The 2k up cavies and ires use a plastic tank instead of the metal one found in the previous years..phil

I was just wondering, a plastic one would be fine too, i just dont like the idea of a metal tank. As far as fuel cells go, i font know much. I guess i should look into that. Would the plastic tank in the newer models be a direct bolt up for mine, or are they a different shape?

Get an 03-05 plastic tank from a cav or sunfire.

ya know..i had thought about that before too..i just changed my fuel pump and i was like " damn heavy metal tank" and i knew the newer ones used plastic but would like to be sure that the existing fuel pump and everything would fit the newer tank..im sure the tank itself would "strap up" the same...any one actually done this so we can be sure? anyone know just how much weight loss this is worth?

I'm curious as well. My metal tank is getting quite rusty. I plan on stripping the bottom of the car and undercoating it all, and would like to replace the tank with a plastic one if possible.

I a 95 and a 2000 conv. cav in my driveway...i BELIEVE the 2000 has plastic aswell..if the weight is worth it and the pump will fit in it ill just swap the tanks around ...anyone know?

teh 2k up has a plastic tank since thats when they changed over to the rear evap setup..well some 99's do have it back there but with the metal tank...as for weight savings..id say prolly less then making it worth it.

I am guessing that the sending unit has a different way of attaching to the metal tank than the plastic one....I believe the plastic one uses the giant nylon nut to hold it in place, and i believe the metal one uses the older style 5-spoke design....I could be wrong on that.

Out of curiosity, why did you recomend this? better design? better acceptance of aftermarket pumps? im interested...

Just lighter than the metal tanks. No idea on the fuel pump mounting and all.

The Modules are different according to the GM parts catalogue!

2000-2005 the fuel pump sending unit is different from the earlier years. I even think the 99 is different than the 95-98 years too. If you have a plastic tank you can use the newest model pump, if you have metal then your different as well.

I know my 99 has a "interesting" fuel pump compared to the others.

the 99's is the same as the 2k up. But it has a metal tank and the evap system out back. It is kinda a bastard year between the 2. great if your doing a eco swap

anyone whos ever looked into buying a better pump knows that the two PUMPS are different...but thats not what matters(if your trying to keep the same pump) all that matters is that you can seal and secure your excisting pump on another tank..the part numbers are differnt cus the pump inside is different..but just how differnt are the assemblys where it seals on top?? we need to actually look at both pump assemblys and see how each one secures to the tank to see if a pre99 pump will fit in a 2k+ tank....any volunteers?

ok guys..im gonna figure out the pump fitment issue this week at work...can anyone find a way to find the weight of both tanks? so i can see if this will even be worth it before i go and buy another tank?? thanks

^^^^ contact an online parts store that sells both models, and ask what the shipping weights are. That should give you the difference in weight. I really dont think it will be much though. The advantages for me are 1) plastic doesnt rust 2) i believe there is a drain plug in the plastic model.

The POLYETHYLENE (plastic) tank is only 4lbs. lighter then the steel tank. The plastic tank is actually about 1/4" thick which makes it fairly heavy.

The plastic tank is from an '00 sedan and the steel tank is from my 'Vert.

Here is what I think could be another factor in "Fuel Pump Cut" when changing to a bigger internal pump. This 3/8" hole is the only way to get fuel into "Cage" (for lack of a better word) that the fuel pump sets in.

I cut the corner off (a little to close to my 3" exhaust for my taste) and made a deeper sump. Then plastic welded the side and bottom sump on and used an external fuel pump.

Gary, Hows the external working for you? Which one did you use, and can it be used with the factory pump as well?

I'm using an Aeromotive 11106. It would be over kill with an internal pump. The one time I've had it fired up it worked great. I'm changing a few things around so I can run E85 so it'll be a little while before it's on the road.

Gary, I am running an MSD inline with the stocker still in the tank. I didn't want to go the Walbro in tank route until they actually made a drop in for our application. I would assume the MSD is similar to the Aeromotive you are using, but without modifying my tank to get the fuel to the inline pump, I am fairly sure I need to run my factory pump as well.

Datwhite Cavy, I believe the tanks are a similar enough shape that it would be very easily done if you get the tank, sending unit (& pump), and straps....sounds like Gary has more expirience with it than I do.
