I have noticed some people remove their IDI covers and run wires to dual msd coil packs, is this a good mod or is it only for certain types of performance engines? I dont know much about the engine side of things just the basics, would it be good for me to do this mod?
its not really that big of a deal to stay with the coil pack. looks cooler with msd.
so it wont be much of a gain to do this?
not for the price really, i was going to do it but after talking to some people the benefit is minimal so im not even gonna bother.
incorrect. the ignition upgrade it self will not per say give you a power increase from just this, but it will increase a gain from every other mod put on the motor. so you can look at it as a very worth while gain. not to mention a better burn in the cylinder, and if you go all out with a dis 2 set up you have the ability to retard your timing. so yes. it "looks cool" but its NOT there for looks. there are reasons that we have done such a thing. i my self am playing with a neon coil, which cut the cost in half.

Vincent has a good point, IMHO depends on your situation. In my case I had the money, my coils required replacing due to age, and I wanted the most spark for my S/C LD9.
To date I am very happy with the performance I am getting, Yet like Vincent said, if the price bothers you or you don't have to replace them right now, should you bother?
It's not worth it if it's running fine. I did it on my W41 since I had the whole 2.2 engine that I could use the coils from. I won't do it for my Ld9. If you are going with stock 2.2 coils or Neon coils. don't bother. You won't gain any power.
It SEEM (no proof and I sure don't believe my brain) to run better on my W41 but I run 12:1 compression with moderate cams. For what it cost to get the whole MSD setup and the average people here, it's not worth it. If you have a really built engine, I can see the use but still. Karo has one of the fastest NA 2.4 and he was using the stock 2.4 coils IIRC.
