Umm first ill suggest some periods, commas and maybe some grammar skills. Not saying mine is at all good but come one.

As from what i could extract from this mystry paragraph. You want to get your ported and polished but the guy wont disassemble the head or reassemble it. The guy doing the assembly and diassembly is going to charge $1000 to do that. If thats the case yes..its a rip off.

You can get a full head package from patriot for about 1200 fully ported polished and assembled.

Are you real? Not for real, just real. I'm not sure if this is some sort of joke or if you are serious...

Any fool with a valve spring compressor can disassemble the head in 10 or 15 minutes. If you mean the head is still on the car then getting it removed, disassembled and ported it going to cost a lot of money. If you are serious and a real person do the basic mods first, porting the head isn't going to net effective gains sucking and blowing air through stock parts. You really need to start from step 1 on performance rather than taking "the best" of what someone says and assuming you need it.

I can smell this thread being linked to other forums around the intraweb....

1. Dont touch your head.

2. Go to school.

3. Learn things (take english)

4. Consider touching your head if you've completed step three and understand the benefits, cost, and negatives about modifying vehicles.

As I see it if you dont know how to do a basic port and polish you should never even have someone else do it for you. You need to walk before you run and if some guy says give me 500 dollars and heres your race ported head back. Well if you understand the basics then you'll know what to look for.

I.E. If the idiot doing it knows its a street driven car and it comes back to you with a smooth as glass finish on the intake port walls you know you did'nt get what you wanted.

There is alot of things to understand here and just a basic P&P is not going to do you substantial gains unless you have modifications and tuning ability to back it up. If you cant even understand how to take a head apart (One of the simplest things to do when you have the proper tools and measurement devices) then you cant possibly know what your getting into.

[Bored, so here's a translation:]

Ok, so on Saturday morning I went to a machinist to get a good 'ol long-awating port and polish. I'm feeling happy as hell, thinking that I'm just one step away from getting to where I want [to be with my car]. I had the money, so I ask this guy if he can do the job. He asks me if I already had the engine disassembled.

I'm like "WHAT?".

"Yeah," he said, "we don't take it apart here".

I was bewildered, and because of my limited knowledge is cars I wasn't sure how to proceed. There was another guy working there who handed me a business card, and told me "Here is a guy who can take it apart and deliver it to us. We do the job, then he can reinstall the head".

Thinking this guy just saved the day, I call the number thinking that he shouldn't charge too much. On the contrary, he wanted one-fricking-thousand dollars for a head removal and reinstall. Now, the people here at the ORG are the masters of these cars... was I getting hustled? I'm getting discouraged since I was lead to believe a port and polish would be the easiest path to horsepower, and I can't even get that much done.

[editors note: the following is abbreviated severely for lack or relevance]

Then I got "stuck" in a mass drag race, where I held my own against a bunch of Hondas with turbos. Barely. I want to do better though, and I think a port and polish would make a difference. I need help, and I want to learn more about my car.

Half of thatis a good price. why don't you buy a used head on ebay and use that to P&P then reasemble your self with a hanes manual. Cavaliers are simple cheap cars. hence why i love mine You only need 6 sockets and one wrench to remove the entire motor.

No, you need to reconsider HOW you ask for help. If people can not easily understand your post, they won't bother trying to figure out what your problem is, and how to offer assistance. Don't make people have to work to help you, and you'll get more help.

tl;rp
I got down to the part about $1k.
If you have an LN2, yes, that's a rip off. Otherwise, I don't find it all that surprising (twin cam is a pain to take apart).
If you have an LN2: do it yourself. As long as you drain the fluids out of the head, its simple.
