is it rubbing on something or is one of the pulleys, brackets bent or not spinning straight? there are lots of things that can cause excessive tension on a belt and cause it to brake.

define "break" ........
either its rubbing on something and getting chewed up or she is assuming that it breaks because its getting thrown off while driving due to bent pullies like whitegoose said.

i had a supra that would throw the power steering belt off every couple weeks from a misaligned pullies.

I'm betting a bent crank pulley or worn out tensioner.

she has no idea if its rubbing against anything cause the belt just dissappears. but the first time it happened there were some pieces left that looked shredded.

also its a 95 sunfire 2.2L 4 dr and she says that there is no tensioner pulley on it, both her father and bf (whom both are mechanically inclined) verified this for me. i was just wondering if anyone else has heard of something like this.

thanks

No tensioner...what!?!?
The 2.2l has a tensioner, it is toward the back of the engine (it's an auto-tensioner, but a tensioner nonetheless). Does she hear a squeaking when running the car with a belt? If so then it is likely a pulley with bad ball bearings. Otherwise it's probably a misaligned pulley.

if they are mechanically inclined are they the ones putting the belts on for her?
tensioners go bad so it will be just good practice to replace it. go to the parts store and get one , replace the belt and wtch it when the motor is running to make sure she doesnt have a bent pulley
