i have this problem...is this the correct answer?
Thursday, March 06, 2008 3:29 PM
for the last few months my car has been "sputtering" and is jerky when i try to accelerate hard. I thought it was the spark plugs, so i got them changed. When they were changed, the place told me my catalytic converter is bad and that is the cause of the "drag". Is this true? if so, i dont have a problem getting a new catalytic converter. Or what do you guys think it is that way i'm not wasting my money getting things replaced that dont really need replaced?

and if it is a catalytic converter, i was looking at a catco one because it seems to be the best price i could find. but what size is our stock piping? i have an 02 z24. is it 2"? 2.25"?

thanks for your help and input

Sounds more like a sensor issue to me. TPS or MAP would be where I'd start. Don't go throwing money into a new cat just yet.

a tps and map are them if not more expensive.

Easy way to tell if the cat is clogged, remove it.

I would check the rest of the ignition system first. Like the coil cover.

what is the best way to check this? where would a good place be to go and get it checked out? i dont want to take it back to the shop i just took it too because they are just going to say its the cat. And i dont know enough to do it myself. Thanks for the answers. I almost bought a new catalytic converter and now i am glad i haven't done it yet.

Does the check engine light start flashing when this happens?

Its very possible that it could be the cat. This happened to my 03 ecotec cav and it only had 60,000 miles on it. It did exactly what you are talking about. Let your car run for about 10-20 Minutes in the dark and then look underneath it. If your cat is glowing then you know that its bad.

i will let it run and then see what it does...

the check engine light is on all the time....so hopefully once the cat is fixed (if thats the problem), that d*mn light will go off
