Resonator / Muffler Help
Monday, March 10, 2008 12:54 PM
I am currently redoing my entire turbo and exhaust system and I'm looking for a good resonator / muffler to use upstream in my exhaust. My goal is simple, very good flow and very very quiet until the wastegate opens. A full 3" mandrel bent system using two very big mufflers to keep the sound down but that are straight through flow design so they will not compromise performance.

The muffler i plan to use at the end of the exhaust system is huge but i am pretty sure it will fit, here are it's specs.

Now for the muffler/resonator to use upstream in my exhaust i am undecided and looking for peoples input. It needs to be 3" inlet/outlet straight through design, case diameter 4"-5.5" with the case being longer than 14". In my previous two exhaust systems i've used 18" long Dynomax Race Bullet mufflers as a resonator but i'm looking for something even quieter now, any suggestions???

Thats one i've been considering, i only wish it were longer. It is only 14" long vs the 18" Dynomax Race Bullet mufflers i've used in the past, but it has a bigger 5" case vs the Dynomax's 4" case which means more sound deadening material. Its a really tough choice which is the reason i made this post looking for other alternatives.

Keep the ideas coming!

Here is another place that you can look into that has very nice quality parts.

I hear ya on that one. I have a 18" Magnaflow on my car but seeing as you are limited due to your 3" pipe diameter you don't have as many options. How about this one?

The only problem I see is that it has 6" diameter meaning its gonna @!#$ weigh a lot and its gonna want to pull down the entire exhaust system. Some custom hanger placements might be needed to pull it up close to the body so that your not scraping it on any speed bumps/potholes and such.

The Race Bullet is part of the Dynomax Ultra-Flo line, the only step up from their 4" that i've used in the past is a 6" case which makes me nervous about ground clearance.

I know they make very nice parts but their longest case is only 15.5".

That 6" case makes me nervous about ground clearance, if i knew it would fit i'd buy it for sure.

Good ideas guys, keep them coming.

Someone here used a 31" case Thrush after moving his cat further forward (No problems) along with a Walker Dynomax and got a note that was barely louder than stock with way better performance & quieter interior levels. I'd recomend trying for that & maybe (If you're going the dual-tip route) using additionally resonator tips to further fine-tune the note. Remember: Nobody likes the sound of something farting, and it is better to be quick & quiet than loud & going nowhere.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".
