Another Junk Yard Question
Thursday, March 06, 2008 10:14 AM
Ok so i posted not to long ago asking if a quad 4 had a H.O manifold if it had H.O cams. I thought that the valve cover said just the standard 16 Valve quad 4, but i had seen so many of those while i was at the junk yard that today when i went back i realized that it didnt have a valve cover at all. So now i'm back to my original question, if it has a H.O manifold does that mean it has H.O cams?

Wow, umm... the biggest indicator is going to be what car its in, or what the last 3 casting numbers on the head are...

Are you lost?

10 bucks says it is either a Pontiac, Chevy, or Oldsmobile......

No way, it had to be some kind of import like a honda or maybe even toyota.

Look at the VIN plate on the dash... if the 8th digit is "A" then it's an HO motor. If it's a "D", it's a LO.

Good thinking John, I should slap myself in the face right now...

However, I have heard of more than a few HOs being blown and swapped with LOs just out of convenience. Checking the casting numbers on the head would still be a good idea, 086, 753, and I think like 456 are the standard HO head numbers the last 3 digits are the key.

What's a 117,XXX mile HO motor worth? I found an 086 in the yard today and I'm wondering if I should go back and pull it tomorrow?

is it the WHOLE motor? if so there is plenty of value..theres only so many things that go wrong..and since you got the engine out its the PERFECT time to install the new headgasket and water pump..then PRESTO good as a new engine ....

Head casting has nothing to do with whether it is a HO or not. The LGO (aka HO, Vin A's) came with a 753, 955 and 086 head depending on the year, but so did the LD2 (aka LO, Vin D's). The only possible difference might be the valve spring rates in the head, but there is no way to tell what they are without removing them. As far as the engine is concerned, the pistons and cams are what makes a HO a HO. Like Lenko said, the best indicator is the Vin #, but like you said, people do replace them with cheaper LO's... so there really is no true way to be sure without tearing the engine apart.

Buying a 100K+ mile quad 4 head, from a vehicle in a junk yard is like playing Russian roulette. They are notorious for cracking. If the yard wants more than a $100, I wouldn't even consider it. I had bought a refurbished and pressure tested head for a little over $200 from J&C.....HERE IS AN AUCTION OF THEIRS FOR AN 086. Great service.

Yeah, whole motor (except intake mani and IDI cover, which I pulled yesterday, and the TB, which was already gone).
The motor is pretty dirty, except the head, which is perfectly clean...so I'm thinking it's pretty new.

Could be...I really don't know how much a yard would want for a HO engine (I have yet to come across one in the yards). You might want to compare prices with a LO, especially if you plan on rebuilding, seing as the LO is about 95% the same as the HO engines. Just a thought.

Water jackets have to be drilled out to match your block. These are a couple good posts regarding a quad head on an LD9.

...but there are plenty of other posts about how to do it and what it changes.

Motors are a flat rate, and come out to about $200 after taxes and core charges for a complete motor with all accessories. However, since I already have some of it, and I wouldn't need the accessories, the longblock is about $150 all said and done.
I doubt I would ever use the motor, so it would probably just be for resale. I'm sure I could find an AZ guy who would want it.
