Im cross posting most of the from a local forum. So it will seem a bit jumpy, but youll figure it out. I will split up individual day's posts with numbers. This only goes back a month or so and doesnt include any of the new motor pics etc. I think I posted those up somewhere last summer/fall.
1.
figured I should just start one post for anything that I have done, or will be doing this winter.
So far I managed to get the trans out and fixed the non-shifting 3/4 gear. That is all back in and working now.
I also pulled out the engine harness in prep for installing mega squirt, MSD DIS-2, and moving the factory DIS module off the back of the block (more on that next week probably)
Next, I am finally getting around to making radiator/IC ducting. The stock z24 v6 cars had a plastic duct that helped to direct air from the GM "flap" up into the radiator as there are no cutouts in the bumper or grille. Given the fact that Im using an aftermarket radiator and I have an IC in the way, I decided to make my own.
Here is what I have so far.
I still need to trim a tiny bit more out of the bumper support so I can fit a piece between the top of the opening and the top of the IC in. Also need to fab up a coulpe of "wings" to sorta fill in the rest of the bumper cutout and to increase (or maybee decrease) the size of the IC opening. Then get it riveted up etc.
2.
almost done, minus riveting and lower mounting features.
I need to trim the bumper to put the top piece in here. I put my paper template in quick just for reference.
I will probably also add a piece from the bottom of the bumper opening to the bottom of hte IC core, a mirror of the top piece more or less.
I think I need to make a quick piece that fits up in there under the top IC pipe. I was gonna just leave it, but itll be easy enough to put another piece in there when its out of the car.
I forgot to grab a pic of it witht he bumper cover on, but basically this fills up the entire mouth of the cover now.
3.
Took a few quick pics with the bumper cover sorta sitting in place.
4.
Ok, the ducting is pretty well done. I need to make two mouting tabs for hte bottom of the radiator, and add some new holes to attach the inside of hte mouth of the bumper cover to the inner support. But pretty much it done. I do need to clean up the marker lines etc, but its too fn late right now.
Some pics with the clecos installed, test fitting etc.
And all finished up, minus what I mentioned above, and "in".
Ill prob post up some more pics once I have the bumper back on. Until then moving on to the next project. Coil relocation and MSD DIS-2 / Mega squirt install.
5.
Getting back to other stuff now. I finished up the relocation mount for the ignition module and coil pack today. Also my shorted wires came back from Magnecor. They charged me like 10 bux plus 8 ship to shorten the set. I think I lost about 15" from each wire with the relocation.
I also got the MSD box mounted. Im using some neoprene standoffs to attempt to keep the MSD box in one piece. I think they were like 1.50 ea from McMaster. MSD wants like 15 bux for a set. Plus I had to use all diff lenghts.
6.
Got the rev 2 heatshield made and almost all on tonight. I just need to weld on the standoffs but ran out og gas, ugh. Its 0.030" ss that i finally remembered I got like 5 years ago. I rolled it at my buddies dad's place.
Also I got most of the MS wired up. It should, along with the charge pipe , be done tomorrow.
7.
Not a ton of progress today as I had to work at the shop and switch two sets of wheels etc etc.
Anyway, I have the MS just about all wired up. Im short a couple of sockets for the firewall connector and the chassis connector. Mainly the inside portion is done. I also got the engine harness taken apart and the coil pack wiring extended and a few other things cleaned up and some unused wires removed.
Tomorrow's plan
- Get engine harness finished up, loomed, and reinstalled
- Connect MS to car and see if I can see the sensors, cal throttle etc (dep on what wires I cant hook up yet due to the lack of pins)
- Finish welding on standoffs for cold side charge pipe heat shield
- Finish last 3" of weld on the filter tube
- blast, paint and reinstall upper water neck
- whatever else there is time for.
Stupid wiring pics
The two connectors are for the firewall, the single one connects all the gauge senors and MS to the car (power etc). The relay, which is the only relay not in my main power dist panel is for the timing bypass, basically to lock timing at 10deg.
yes, I measured every piece of heat shrink, and I still need to add a backshell. I didnt like the one that was sent with the MS. Ill grab a nice one at work monday.
Engine harness (well, most of it)
8.
Lots more done today. I think I may have even hit the whole list.
MS is all wired and in the car, minus the few sockets i still need.
Engine harness is all redone, loomed, and installed.
Charge pipe heat shield standoffs welded, just add powdercoat.
Filter tube welded. Id like to just tig over it quick before I get it coated as well.
Upper water neck sandblasted, beaded and painted and installed with the new silicone upper radiator hose ( so glad to be rid of the universal rubber spiral hose bs)
I wanted to finally bead the tubing on the upper water neck I made a few years ago. I have plans to make a roller type tubing bender for smaller tubing, but I just didnt have time yet and watned this back together. So I made my own crimping beader out of an old pair of vise grips. Not a perfect bead but enough to keep the hose from popping off (not that it ever did before, but certainly cant hurt)
Heat shield standoffs:
A couple motor pics, with everything pretty much installed. The engine and gauge harness is in there too
Complete Engine and gauges harness:
Looks like I may be able to start setting up MS, checking sensors etc, on tuesday
That pretty much brings this years mess up to sunday night.
More to come. I'll try to update this regularly now.
