I have got a 94' Cavalier and I race it in a 1/4 mile asphault track. It has the 2.2 with an auto transmission... I put a tach in it to check my RPM's. When coming out of the turns I am running 1500 and by the time I get to the end of the straight, I am running 1800. I didn't think his sounded right and I wanted to check what my rev limiter limited at so in park, I gave it gas at the throttle body. It appearantly limits at 2000 RPM. I know this can't be right. I never hit the limiter on the track and to the best of my knowledge, it's not missing. I have been told a coil could be going out which is messing up where the car limits at but I dont know. All opinions would be appreciated because I have no clue where to begin... Thanks!
Also, I have put a new computer and PROM in it so I don't think that would be the problem.... Thanks in advance for all replies.....
your tach isn't hooked up right. I'm pretty sure the limiter in park is 4000
um, all your numbers are wrong. I am with skirl on your tack not being hooked up right
even on the track, granted the ln2 is set up for torq, not 1800rpm torq thats for damn sure

Those so naive, so hard headed, so narcissistic, that think that buy their own efforts can single handedly change the world, are always the ones that do.
Well the reason I hooked up the tach in the first place was to see how many RPM's I am running..... Where everyone has "gettup and go" I am left trying to get my RPM's up out of the turns. You can tell you dont have the power in the car.... Thats what makes me think something is wrong with the car
You should easily be able to tell the difference between 2,000 rpm and around 4,00 rpm. the engine pitch is so much louder at 4,000 rpm.
Check the back of the tach. Make sure it is set on 4-cyl. You might have to buy a new tach if you bought one only compatible for a V8. So if it is set for a V8, it will show only 2,000 RPM when really the engine is at 4,000 RPM because its wanting to see "double" the pulses. As a 8 cylinder has 2x more plugs to fire. 8 pulses on a V8 is 1 full rotation. 8 pulses on a I4 is 2 full rotations. 8 pulses on a V6 is 1.5 roations. See how it works??

Doesn't he also need the tach adapter to get a proper reading, or was that just for my 96 2.2?
The need for a tach adaptor depends on the tach he has. If it can set his tach for 2cyl he doesn't need one. If the tach only sets down to 4 cyl, then yes, he'll need one.
The GM Waste Spark DIS (two tower ignition coils) fire two cylinders at a time, one for the power strke and one during the end of the exhaust stroke. This makes the ingition system seem like a 2 cylinder motor. Most tachs don't set that low, hence the adaptor is needed and the tach reads half as many actual rpm.

MadJack, thanks for the input.... I have the sunpro tach.... I noticed the earliest adapter I can get for the 2.2 is 95'...... Is it the same as the 94'?????
Should be, I don't think the ignition changed at all between the 2 years.
2K is normal driving RMP (cruse speed)... 4K is much much louder and you should easily be able to tell the difference

So I am reading exactly half of what it really is? If so I probably wont get the adapter. The only reason for a tach was to get a close estimate to the RPM's i would be running....
