Hey guys..Got quite a few questions. My friend is about to buy one of my other friends 2.2l 01' Cavi's, he doesn't seem to know much and I don't seem to know much about Cavaliers so I came here to ask.
The car has 140k miles on it, and isn't in bad condition at all. Currently it's lowered (with some horrible springs..useless) and has a chopped up exhaust system. The engine is in good condition with no history of problems, and it's a 5sp manual transmission, which also doesn't seem to have any noticeable problems. We had taken the valve cover off to replace the gasket (Seemed to be leaking) And polish it and the valves/springs seems to be in good working order.
But he wants to put an engine rebuild kit, namely the one from this site:
http://www.importperformanceparts.net/imports/pek-cavalier.html
He wants to get the 10.5-1 compression ratio pistons with the rebuilt kit, 1mm oversized valves (int and exhaust), stage 2 cam
http://www.importperformanceparts.net/imports/ippwebcam-cavalier2.html
Along with this we were going to do a new header, magnaflow racing catalytic converter (14105) and muffler (14850) with 2.5" piping. What he wants to know is - how should he get it tuned, and will the motor be able to handle this? What kind of power gains should he be expecting?
Thanks
Frosty
just replaced my valve cover gasket today....these cars are known to have this problem...simple fix tho. Getrag tranny in her is a half decent tranny. The rebuild kit and cam seem alright...not sure if the price is decent though. Someone else may know more. Exhaust setup sounds good. The car could be tuned using HP tuner and yes the motor should handle those mods. Not sure on the powr gains tho.
Sounds good, i'm sure he'll be happy about that.
What about the bumped up compression ratio? The rebuilt kit comes with a new 'performance copper head gasket'? For some reason this doesn't seem like the best choice for a heatgasket? Copper is a semi-soft metal, I have a SAAB 2.0l LK9 and they recommend the cometic metal head gasket. But I guess a copper head gasket is a metal gasket so..
I know nothing about there rebuild kit but the 10.5:1 pistons should be fine I have a set for a 2200 sitting on my desk also Eagle rods will be nice. 2.25 inch exhaust is a little better cause it will aid better in the scavenging of the ignition. I hope your friend doesn't won't crazy power cause he's tuning the wrong motor for that N/A he'll maybe be around 120-125 with a good tune. Hell I'm shooting for 130 and my build is extrememly intensive compared to your plans.

more info on ur extensive build?
Infantry!!!
I would watch out for the cams.....they are not what they say they are....
The engine kit is very complete. I ordered from them for mine. Ended up getting the wrong Eagle rods, and a few other things were off (they sent me a 2.2L gasket set instead of the 2200), but handled it very well. Everything I got from them was nice, high quality parts.
Copper is a good head gasket for racing, but I wouldn't want it on a street car. They often require re-torquing, but you should be able to either get the cometic with the kit, or at least remove the copper one, and buy the cometic one ala-cart (I did the later...)
Its bascically a high compression N/A build as another JBO member finishes uyp the supercharger project. I have 1.5 to 1 pistons., Eagle rods, Fully ported head, 3-angle valve cut, 1mm oversized intake valve, custom cam grind(specs haven't been worked out yet), 1.6 ratioo rockers, ARP pushrods, Early 2.2 oil pump, nd your basic bolt ons. I have some other stuff being done but I'd rather keep that stuff secret until the build is done.
