What kind of potential do ecotec's have?
Wednesday, April 30, 2008 6:51 PM
Im considering swapping a turbo ecotec into my 87 fiero GT, but its still a tossup between a few other options. What is the weight of these engines? How much boost can they take with stock internals? Ive heard they can also take quite a good shot of n2o, how much exactly? Is there a LSD readily available? Thanks in advance.

can't remember the exact number of psi the stock internals can take but I believe 9 seems to be a decent number.

Dude, the ecotec sucks. It has no potential. That's why my car hits high 14's with minor mods. Seriously though, it's a good factory backed racing motor with lots of potential. I'm sure it could take more than 9 psi if it was properly tuned.

there is a difference between 9 psi from a saab turbo and 9 psi from a holset turbo.

The eco's stock bottom end is pretty decent. you'll be fine with a moderate turbo set up on the stock bottom end.

Bottom end can be pushed to 270 whp, thats it's limits and extremely pushing it, you'd need an excellent or perfect tune to run that high. I ran my stock 2002 ecotec on 12 psi for a year before it went, that was 253 whp.

If you can tune and drive with a light foot most of the time you will be fine.

It has as much potential you can throw at it, assuming you have a wallet that holds a lot of bills The ecotec is a great engine. When 100% built, pros have got 200MPH passes and 1600HP out of them. If you have read about fiero swaps then you know of an 3.8 supercharged swap. Since the 4T65E transmission will work with the fiero, I would use an adapter plate and theL61 ecotec engine with a turbo! You would have a car that will handle great, and be powerful.

If you're going through the work to swap in an eco, why not invest in rods and pistons? You're potential will increase to ~400whp...

Is there something wrong with the available transmissions for ecotecs? Ive read up on the L67's a fair bit and they are still a big contender but the weight difference is a fair bit. Another problem with the L67's is they have a good bit of low end torque, and GM doesn't have any manual tranny's that can reliably handle the power (well, anything even slightly over the stock L67). Id really like to go manual if i can, so im hopeing that the ecotec's lack of low end torque will allow the use of a manual tranny with a little more reliability. Though, i dont know much about these engines, so i dont know if theres even a strong enough manual tranny i could use on a boosted ecotec.

Adam Hahn of Hahn Race Craft has an 800HP Turbo Ecotec that is still using the factory stock F23 manual transmission. The manual transmission is plenty strong, strong enough to handle 800HP and way strong enough to propel a lightweight car like a fiero around. I don't know much about team green, but everybody swears that the LSD is simply amazing! Go to a Junk yard and pull an engine and transmission out of a 2003-UP cavalier or sunfire. Then contact hahn and get a stage one or two turbo kit, and have fun with your fiero blowing the doors off the competition. You will have a lighter vehicle than an L67 swap fiero, and almost just as much power while keeping a manual transmission! good luck with you build and keep us posted.

Ever weighed the block and head in comparison to the components on it?

I hate those arguments.

Just for FYI. I'm prepping an eco for 300-400WHP and I've only spent around 3K to do it on my old engine that I blew.

Then its just a turbokit and megasquirt.
