My 2001 Z has an issue. I did the 086 head swap and first thing that happend when I started the car was I heard this nasty rattle so I got on here asked for advice and was told check the timing tensioner. Low and behold I forgot to reset it when I put things back together. Then after I fixed that I noticed that around 3000 rpm the engine makes this nasty almost grinding sound. I take it to my local machine shop guy and get him to listen. We used mechanics stethascopes and he thought the sound was coming from the bell housing, I thought it was coming from the rear camshaft. So his diagnosis was that I have a cracked flexplate. Today I took off the intake manifold and starter looked at the flexplate rotated it and looked for more cracks. I see nothing that even resembles a crack. So if it isnt a cracked flexplate what could it be?
you stated that you thought it was the rear camshaft, so why not take the cover off and inspect it?
I had a similar problem after my swap, but I lost significant power too. Turned out I forgot to torque my YANK Torque Converter bolts tight enough. This might not have been your problem, but from what you have described, it doesn't sound camshaft related to me.
I remember you telling me that Brian. Were they really loose or just at different torque settings n throwing things off? Im starting to wonder if my Yank converter is an ebay ripoff and thats the problem. Im going to unbolt the converter and push it all they way on the pump. bolt things back together and see if I still hear the noise. That should eliminate the converter as the problem if I still do.
damn, i was hoping to hear an 086 success story out of you!
get it fixed man!

Riddle me this... riddle me that...
I def will and soon. Now that the semester is over I will actually have time to work on it. I have plans to see the track this summer.

They weren't "sloppy" loose from what I remember. They just weren't torque speced, only hand tightened. We took a torque wrench to it using the Haynes torque specs and it has been running great ever since. Again...probably not your problem, but it wouldn't hurt to torque them to spec when you bolt your trans back up, if you hadn't before.
