dynomax super turbo
Thursday, May 08, 2008 2:38 PM
Right now I have stock exhaust. I was hoping to save up money and buy all my exhaust stuff at once, but it doesnt look like thats going to happen. So since I've decided to get one piece at a time, I figured I would start with the muffler. How bad would a super turbo sound with the rest of the exhaust stock? i dont want it to be raspy or gargly at all, and just slightly louder than stock. I am probably going to put a fair sized resonator or glass pack on just to make sure it wont be too loud. My brother has one on his S10 (2.2L) and it sounds realy good, just a tad louder than I would want my car to be. Also, would just replacing my stock muffler with the super turbo help out my gas mileage at all? I just wanted to post up and see what you thought. Thanks in advance!

It's hard to say if it alone will help improve your mileage, but going with it with a resonator of the same size is certainly popular here. The result of the combo is it's barely louder than stock, and nice & deep. Not at all raspy or "ricey". Just remember: Unless you include a header & after-market catalytic converter as part of the package, 2"-diameter pipe is all you'll need. Otherwise (Depending on all you've "bolted-on" to the engine) 2-1/4" to 2-1/2" will do. And by the way, the header system (With Pacesetter's 4-2-1 header) along with a free-flowing air inlet/filtration system is the best way to go for mileage.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

well, i have an intake with a k/n filter. in the future i plan on a 4-1 pacetter and a magnaflow cat with 2-1/4 pipe. i am wanting to put a muffler on now, and put on the rest as i get it, and put the pipe on last with the header.

Well, Dynomax Superturbos are inexpensive... So go head!

As long as you haven't taken off your factory cat or resonator, the Super Turbo should sound nice. It will only start to sound raspy if it was the only muffling component on the exhaust, and/or you are running it with a header. Just do yourself a favor if you're doing it piece by piece and get a reducer to hook it to your stock pipe, and use band clamps, not the cheap crimping ones. Otherwise you'll run the risk of squashing the inlet on the muffler, so it's a PITA when you go to upgrade your pipe.

so if i leave the stock resonator in there, it wont be that bad? i guess i forgot about that lol. yea, i was thinking about putting a reducer piece in there, and im not sure if i want to weld it in now, or just clamp it in until i get the right pipe size. besides, i can always go back and put a resonator in if its a little too loud.

I posted a video of my full exhaust in this forum today take a listen to it. My exhaust was one of the most expensive cavalier exhausts that I know of, but I did it piece by piece. I made it all myself and got it all tig welded (stainless). It sounds awesome!

manifold - 360
turbo exhaust flange - 30
wastegate pipe - 45
downpipe - 50
2 v band clamps - 75
front portion - 100
flex - 60
qtp cutout - 200
dna muffler - 160
rear portion - 160
borla xr-1 - 190
tips - 65
welding - 150

total $1645

i have a pace setter header into a 2.5" catco cat into a 2.25 glassback 30" threw the stock pipe to a 2.5 black vibrant mufffler. steer clear of vibrant. it sounds real nice on idle but hard pulls it is way to loud. i am looking into a magnaflow right now.

I dunno if this will help or not, but I ran a Dynomax super-turbo on my '90PGT turbo, gutted cat, no resonator, etc.
It had a low rumble at idle, but was really quiet at full boost and rpm. Looks nice, fit well, flowed well, and was not pricey.
BUT- that was a completely different car.

I'm runnig one with my PS Header, high flow cat, 35" X 2.25" Thrush Magnum Glasspack and mandrel bent tubing. It has a soft deep rumble at idle and a deep growl under WOT. No rasp what so ever. I had one on my old S-10 (RIP) and sounded real good, behind the 2.8L (3.1L ) V6, most thought it was a V8.

^^ that sounds about right. you dont happen to have a video of that do you ? lol.

if i put the muffler on, and thought it was too loud, would it be better to just add a long resonator (or glasspack) or to replace the stock one? i would be doing everything 2.25" with reducers to match stock pipe, untill i can buy some new pipe.

Well let me try this again! Had a good response going with links, till a Trojan Horse Virus came through the Custom Tubes Inc website, my protection software caught it, but I lost my previous response! My recommendation, stay away from CTI, till they fix that! Anyways...

The only video I have access to is a night time video from Orlando Spin...opps...Speed World Dragway and all you hear is my tires squawking off the line and the Honda, in the other lane, with a fart can muffler going Blaattt, way behind me!!

I'd wait until you get atleast the parts for a cat back together and do that at one time. Aside from the stainless steel models, glasspack mufflers aren't expensive, nor are the Dynomax SuperTurbos. When Aaron at Turbo Tech Racing gets his mandrel bender going, get the rear, over axle pipe section and clamp it together with band clamps (lap joint). Aside from the hanger band around the muffler (modified to fit the Dynomax), a length of strait pipe, a tip/turn down and the adaptor/reducer, that's most of the parts needed.

As for assembly remove the stock system, keeping it as intact as possible (in case you want to go back stock), leaving some pipe behind the cat for the header and high flow cat later. See how you want everything to fit, make any adjustments as needed, cut the tubing (measure twice, cut once), hang it (clamped loosely), make adjustments (no rubbing, rattling nor hinging low) and tighten it all down. It can all be done with a jack, jack stands and common hand tools.

yea i was planning on doing it in my backyard, with just hand tools. i have a friend that can weld pretty good if i decided to do that. so it sounds like i shouldnt put it on one piece at a time, but at least a cat back. then worry about the cat and header later. thats not a bad idea. i really want to do this right, but its also been a while since ive really done anything to my car lol. i know a lot of people put glasspacks on there exhaust instead of resonators, is there really an advantage to using one over the other?
so far, my final plan is 2.25" pipe, 4-1 pacesetter, magnaflow cat, glasspack resonator (not sure what length yet), super turbo muffler, and a fairly stock looking tip. i would like to use as much of the stock hangers as possible when doing this. there's really no need for an over the top setup here. thanks for the help.
