Any tips or tricks on changing 2.3L head gasket?
Monday, May 19, 2008 8:32 AM
Looks like I'm going to have to replace the head gasket on my 95 Cavalier LS 2.3L and I was wondering if any of the more experienced wrenches could share any tips and tricks with this beginner. It looks like it's quite involved but I am experienced with engines just not this particular one. Any help would be appreciated.

How long has the headgasket been out for ? OR in bad shape ? I know if it goes, and the car sits for to long with that lovely mix of oil and coolant on the rod bearings spells disater.

4.2 Hour job.

Get new head bolts, GMS, and a top end kit.

It’s simple. Just intimidating; for people that are comfortable with cam in block engines.

yea...go to the zone and get you a "headgasket kit" from felpro..mine usually runs like 125.00$ for the kit..will come with every seal you need...then start by draining the coolant, supporting the engine, removing the upper / lower mount, timing cover etc and just keep taking stuff off still you get where you need to be ... word to the wise ..the entire timing housing must be removed BEFORE you can remove a cam tower..and when you DO remove the cam tower make sure you roll it forward or backward when you take it off or the lifters will fall out and chip,break,etc...oh...and start looking into how to time it properly NOW..so youll know how when the time comes...i dont think many people ever get that timing right their first time...it can be a bit tricky

now would also be a good time to change the water pump.

Its easy to time as long as you know what you are looking at and have paid attention on how to do it. Get mine the first time every time.

Exactly what should I be looking for when I time it? I'll be doing this job within the next couple weeks and any and all tips are greatly appreciated as are the ones already laid out above. Thanks guys, I don't know what I would do without this wonderful and amazingly helpful site.
