Crane HI-6DI2 igntion vs MSD dis-2
Monday, May 19, 2008 1:07 PM
Hey guys, I was wondering if anybody has run the crane distributerless ignition box.. I know many have run the dis 2 on the j's in the past I had one on the red cav when I was going through nitrous like water. The crane igntion has a 2 step and the abilitiy to pull timing like the dis-2. On summit racing the Dis-2 is $484.30 and the Crane is $329.95. Does anybody have any experience with the Crane product? I emailed the tech department at crane and got the instruction manual for the HI-6DI2 I might buy one for either the LN2 or the ECO I haven't decided yet.

Input?

which dis 2 are you comparing this to?? I am running the 6212 (programmable), and have to say its capabilities are greater than the crane unit....BUT i dont come anywhere near using all of it's functions.

what will this be used for mainly?? boost retard? nitrous? etc....little more info might help with the decision.

I didn't even realize that I posted up without giving the dis model I was comparing it too. Dis-2 plus Depending on which cav I install it on, I would use it on either or. The red car for the hotter spark, 2 step and to pull timing on the boosted ln2 that will also see spray as well.

The silver car would use the 2 step at the track, and possibly retard for spray as I'm contemplating putting a kit on the eco. The sliver car would be getting converted to coil packs located on the strut tower. I'm also thinking of picking up a pair of crane cams and possibly a gm cnc head for the eco. I would like to pep it up for daily driver duty and do head, cams, header, exhaust, intake, and tune on 92 octane

Correct me if i am wrong, but doesnt the eco NOT use a cam sensor for the ignition? I know lots of people have done MSD ignitions on the eco, but for that one, I would say go with this setup:

http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=700+115+308183&D=308183

not the coil swap.

For the Ln2, I think either unit will do what you need. I am more familiar with the MSD, but by looking at Summit's site, for the Crane, it actually says:

"substitue part MSD-62112"

so I am guessing they are dam near the same.

Of course, I can get you the MSD box I have, for the price you were quoted for the Dis-2 plus.

I would also check into the accessories available for the Crane model, and if any are interchangable with MSD.

The down side to the distributer is you replace your power steering pump which is driven off one of the cams, so it wouldn't be ideal for a daily driver unless your grape ape.

I'm going to have to do more research later I'm tired and need to get some rest before I have to go back to work.

Tanks for your input john

any time

i was unaware that the distributor completely removed the p/s pump.

in that case, the MSD or Crane will work for both, but you will need the cam synch for your eco.
