HO Cam Problems - Need Help
Saturday, June 14, 2008 5:50 PM
It's been a while since I posted on here. I made a progress thread a while back and haven't been on since really. I was so busy with school and work, the car sat on the back burner. It's been in the garage for almost a year now and not running. I decided it was time to get it going again. As a little refresher, the bottom end was built a while ago. 8.5:1 pistons, rods, bearings, 2.3l oil pump swap, the whole works. Recently I just had the head re-done. 2mm oversize SS valves, HO springs, HO retainers, port and polish, and a cometic gasket to go along with it. As for the cam setup, I have a HO intake and HO exhaust cam. I am running the 2.3L cam towers with 2.3L lifters. All parts were brand new btw. I got it all bolted together, started it up, and there is a loud ticking sound that sounds like it is coming from the intake cam, drivers side. I ripped the motor out thinking it was a rod bearing. Rod bearings looked perfect. Thought it was maybe defective lifters, so I got them replaced, put the motor back together, and the noise is still there. It gets louder as the RPM's increase. Once you get to a certain RPM range, it sounds as if something is slapping back and forth very fast. Almost as if a lifter isn't filling up the space between the valve and the cam. I don't really know. This will be the 4th time I will have to pull the motor this year alone. Anyone have any suggestions as to what this could be? I did use a pressure can to pressurize the system before i started it, so I know the lifters are pumped up. I let it run for over 20 minutes, and no change. I need help figuring this out! I am in desperate need of my car

I dunno what's up.....forgot to mention that oil pressure at the head is good. 75psi on startup and 50 after it warms up.

And what would that have accomplished?

Sorry Chris, had my phone in my jacket pocket. No wonder I haven't had any calls today!

2 easiest guesses are:

Bad (internally gummed up) lifter.

or

Cam lobe hitting the carrier. There are many different cam carriers out there and some (few but some) do not get along with .410 lift very well.

Would you expect brand new Melling lifters to be gummed up? I bought all brand new ones and replaced 8 of the new ones with different ones already. Just wondering the likelihood. The second possibility is the cam hitting the carrier cover? Looks like I'll have to pull it again and take a closer look.

no

but there is a little one way check valve in there made of a tiny ball bearing and a spring. One small piece of gunk (old baked on oil that came loose, casting sand, etc... even on a fresh rebuild) can easily get caught in it and keep it from pumping up.

Either way I think. your gonna have to take it all back apart.

Did you reset the timing chain tensioner, that almost sounds like timing chain flopping around hitting the timing cover to me.

You know I thought the same thing for a moment while I was listening to it. Sounded kinda like the timing chain. I remember specifically resetting the chain tensioner though.
