So my 01 cavalier has been sitting in my lower driveway for a year after having its rear end demolished by an SUV and the insurance company refused to cover it (don't get fly by night insurance!) anyway, I have started it up every month and let it run for a bit while I saved up for a complete rebuild and all the work I am going to do at the same time, full exhaust system, port and polish and custom paint job. Anyway it has been about a month and a half since I started the car, with 4 days until the car goes to the body shop I hooked up jumper cables and started the car only to have it stall out the moment I released the gas pedal, I kept starting it and it kept dying the instant I let go of the gas, no idle at all, straight from revving up to dead, as long as I hold the gas it runs great. I searched the forums and google and all I could find involving stalling involved erratic idling and since there was no idle at all here I am wondering if this is could be a throttle position sensor, which I have never had a problem with or if I should be looking elsewhere.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Try putting a full charger on the battery if you haven't done so.

I have been jumping it for 6 months with no problems like this, do you think a fully charged battery will make a difference? cause if so I will be grabbing one after work today.
battery charge has nothing to do with how a car idles...cus once the car starts running it actually gets power from the alternator and doesnt even need the battery there.....it sounds like a stuck IAC ....all your doing when you push the pedal down is open the throttle a bit..this lets air in...the iac is supposed to allow the amount of air in that the engine needs to idle..if it gets stuck( probably shut) it wont idle...pull it out and clean it off...it MIGHT come unstuck...but your probably looking at getting a new one
sounds good, I am swinging by the auto parts store today for a list of things that need replacing so that gets added to it.

Not if the alternator isn't working well enough. Sometimes you need the extra small residual charge on the battery to keep it going if alternator is not working up to par.

I know if the alternator is dead that can happen, or at least it did on one of my old cars but the alternator seems fine, easy way to solve this is I can just get both parts since I will need the battery anyway once she is rebuilt.
yeah the IAC was definetly stuck, I couldn't order the part yesterday so I popped it out and cleaned it with a tiny bit of oil and a stiff brush and the car is running perfect again, can't wait to throw it in the body shop on friday.
