Hey all, I'm new to the forum. I know this isn't a Beretta forum but there aren't too many knowledgable people over there, especially on Quad 4's. Anyhow, I've got a 90 Beretta GTZ that I've been restoring slowly but surely since 2005. I've got over 10000 in a brand new motor, 93 trans with EP stage 2 LSD, BFgoodrich tires, KYB and sprint suspension, updated interior, kenwood system, brand new paint job, US body hood, mounts, radiator, dual fan blah blah blah and then a plethora of performance goodies I've yet to do anything with. Basically, it's a real nice car that I'm looking to take to another level.
I really wanted to take the old engine which had a bad rod, and rebuild it for supercharging. I really wanted to do something real unique with a roots charger, I've got an old M62 (which I kinda wish I didn't buy) but I wanted to intercool the blower with a front mounted intercooler. I've looked a little bit for how to route something like that and I'm really not sure it would even work... I really don't want to have to lose the AC and I don't want to move the alternator too far out of place... I think my other options are probably going to be something like a Paxton, a watercooled roots blower, and if none of those look promising I guess it'll have to be turbo. Whatever I do, it's got to be cooled. I want to run 10-15 psi. The M62 I have needs to be rebuilt, I would port it as well and put the smallest pulley on it I can find, which I think is 2.8". Basically, what's your opinion on each option and are they even possible? How would you do it? Tuning shouldn't be too much of an issue because I think it's fairly easy to write info on the old style memcals.
Here's what I've got to work with:
-Worked 086 head, 3 angle? valve job, some W41-like cams, and some port work I think. I bought the head from a guy named Ben in Ohio.
-Walboro 255? Fuel pump
-91 Fuel rail
-Ford Brown Top injectors 36lb/hr?
-Some higher rate injectors I got from Ben, he's not sure what they are, he thinks 42 and up.
-Adjustable fuel pressure regulator (LT1)
-The Race Shop 4-1 header (which I still have to custom weld to fit the Beretta body) It has a 3" collector, so the rest of the exhaust when this project is done, will be 3" as well if it can fit through the rest of the underside.
The other issue I have right now is my trans. It's a 93 3.94 trans. However, 1st and 2nd gear are broke, so that means I either rebuild the one I got (which a lot of people have recommended if I go Boost because lower gears will only make bad wheelspin...) or I can get my hands on a brand new 94? New Venture Olds Sihloutte trans (euro import), which has a lower 1st and 2nd. I also have the original 90 trans. The problems will probably messing with the mounts, and 1st and 2nd are lower than my 93 trans. Here are how the gears look:
Euro trans:
1st 3.77
2nd 2.19
3rd 1.38
4th 1.03
5th .81
FDR 3.94
My 93 trans:
1st 3.50
2nd 2.05
3rd 1.38
4th 1.03
5th .72
FDR 3.94
The 90 trans:
1st 3.50
2nd 2.19
3rd 1.38
4th 1.03
5th .81
3.61 FDR
A very wise person advised for this ammount of power I'm looking to make, a higher FDR would be better for less wheelspin... So the 90 trans would be best, with the exception of the 2.19 2nd, where as the 2.05 would be better. He reccommended the following:
1st 3.50
2nd 2.05
3rd 1.38
4th 1.03
5th .81
3.61 FDR
But, I think I'd have the .72 5th for fuel economy and better top end.
That's my story, and I want to know what you think. Thanks -Cam
i'm not too sure about supercharging the quad motor, but this will help
http://www.quadper4mance.com/m90
as for the rest of your stuff:
- 086 head - came with a 3 angle valve job (almost positive)
- cams depends on your power band with the charger, you might want more low end then top end.
- walboro 255 definitely a good choice if you plan on going boost.
- fuel rail will be fine.
- injectors not too sure, depends on the boost i'd imagine.
- LT1 fpr should be good.
- the TRS header would be awesome if you can get it to fit.
a standalone like mega-squirt would be a really good idea with a custom supercharging job such as this. the directions on how to wire it up are also on that same website link.
i'm not too sure about trans stuff, but i think the 93 NVG-550 is what seems to be the best for quads (or so i hear, again, not 100

. there's also a hybrid Isuzu that has been done before, i'm not sure on the gear ratios though.

LMAO best reply I've ever seen
Lol, I had the thread up for a week and no one seemed to pay it any mind until I say something unruly, I was just trying to get a response.
Anyhow thanks for the info. The guy that I bought the cams from said that he had them made for more low end, as far as the valve job, I'm not sure, he just said something fancy about a valve job done and that he put a lot of money into the thing.
I've actually seen this project before, very nice, but again, is intercooling such a thing even possible?

LOLz. It's not that serious but ok. I mean, I'm a fellow Quad guy fighting against the forces of Vtak too, but it's all good.
You're not helping to dig yourself out of the hole Cam...
