Making my own intake (need help)
Monday, June 23, 2008 9:01 PM
I have not been able to find a true CAI for the 03 Sunfire except AEM
The AEM costs $250.

I found Weapon R, and they are $120, but it has the filter under the hood so it sucks hot air.

I looked around the net and people are buying the 180 degree U bend piping from J.C. Whitney and using a hacksaw to make their own intake.
The pipe section is under $20 from what the DIY website I went to said:
http://www.teamdelsol.com/technical/howto/coldAirIntake/default.html

I went to J.C. Whitney's site and here is what I found:
http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2009635/c-10101/Nty-1/p-2009635/Ntx-mode+matchallpartial/N-10101/tf-Browse/s-10101/Ntk-AllTextSearchGroup?Ntt=180+de gree+u-bend

It is used for headers and exhausts, but I will be using it to make an intake.

Does someone know the diameter pipe the intake uses on the 2003 Ecotec?
I can find out quick but I was hoping to not take the pipe out and then have to hunt around for a tape measure.

Where do you get the rubber pipe fittings? Home Depot?

Thanks guys...

Home Depot or any home rebuilding/remodeling store should be where to look. Also try any local hardware, in the plumbing section.
And whatever the TB diameter is (Where the factory ducting bolts-up) should be the size of tubing you use.

I keep checking E-bay and no one has had an AEM for that price in a long time.
Making my own seems like the only affordable route, I should have an intake for less than $60 if I do it that way.

I appreciate the link; a lot of the links I have had offered were of ended auctions before.

I wonder why when I did a search under Sunfire Intake, it never showed this auction?

Anyways, thank you.

Either way, it's your choice. But before you choose, read my sig & think about it:

I just noticed something, it says this kit is for cars with ABS.

Why do I have to have ABS?

My wife's Sunfire doesn't have ABS.

I don't have ABS. It works just fine for me.

If you can make your own for far less, then go for it. I had the money and I am too lazy to make my own

What "Trim" model Sunfire do you have? Usually the higher the trim model, the more "Goodies" are standard on it. The lower, the fewer. This is especially true as you get earlier in model years. Case in point: Electronic Ignition (Breaker-less, zero-points, transistorized, what have you...). My "72 Newport had it standard (From the factory) because it was an entry-level luxury model. The following model year, all Mopars had it standard. Heck, my dad thought his 2000 Caravan Sport was a "Deluxe" model because of all the standard items it had. Keep in mind here that he was in his late teens in the early '50s, and items like Power-windows & A/C were considered a "Luxury" item then only found standard on Lincolns & Caddilacs, while manual-shift transmissions were considered "Standard". And also remember that as model years progress people (New car buyers) expect certain items to be standard on you average newer models. Ever see a '78 (Or even a '76?) Malibu with factory "Stick-shift"? How about without factory A/C? Or AM/FM radio? Odds are "no", and the reason why is what I just explained. The same goes with any safety-related items, such as air-bags, shoulder-belts, safety glass & ABS. Although those are probably more of the result of a government-issued NHTSA (National Highway Traffic safety Association) mandate that all models from a certain year on have them standard. That & sadly, people just don't seem to want to use their "Common-sense" and build-up & apply their skills when it comes to driving anymore. Dammit, people! The advanced tech safety & handling items are there to compliment your driving skills, not take the place of them!

I'm sorry. Got of on a bit of a rant there, but you got the idea of what I'm conveying in this response. Right? Cool.

The wife's 2003 Sunfire has the manual windows, but power door locks.
I am 90% sure there is no ABS.

EcoCav says he does not have ABS and the intake works fine.
I am probably going to buy one tomorrow.

Thanks guys...

Probably a combination of three things, each a quirk I've noticed with eBay:
1) Searches hunt for words that appear in item titles only (not surprising)
2) In this case, the word "Sunfire" was immediately followed by a slash and "Cavalier" (with no spaces). This made it so "Sunfire" wouldn't appear on its own as a searchable term. This is a common mistake by sellers, making it more difficult to find their stuff.
3) "Store" type items are given lower priority in search results, and tend to appear at the bottom of the list, or not at all if enough regular auctions are available to view.

That makes sense.
I have noticed people on an auction label things wrong or misspell the name which ruins the sale too.

For example, some auction sites will not pop up RX7 if you search for RX-7, and so on. Also, sometimes I have had to type RX 7 and got even more results. It is like I have to think of every combo for the search to come up.

Good point.

We are map sensored and the only sensor involved with your intake is your IAT. you should'nt throw a cel.

maf sensors and intakes are where you run into issues.
I cant see you throwing a Cel unless you suck up water or something.

Well, I did it...

There was only one of the AEM titanium finished NOPI edition cold air Intakes left and I snagged it.

I had the money, then did not, and now I seen that today only one was left. It will take a huge gash out of my disposable income but from what I hear from you guys, it should be worth it.

Thanks again for showing me the link, as it never popped up when I did a search under Sunfire cold air intake, I would have missed out big time.

$139.99 shipped is about as good a deal as I will find on a real deal CAI.
