And call me optimistic, but I think it makes a difference. The car already has a drop in K&N. That bong is one big piece of restrictive plastic @!#$. So I figure I'm splitting the difference between stock and a cold air intake. At some point I'll route 2.5" tubing from the TB to the stock filter box and call it a day. For all those wondering about doing this free mod, just do it if not for the very small hp gain or sound, do it for the two lb weight savings
yes, remove the fender liner and youve got it. the biggest pain is a bolt that goes through the washer resevior to the bong. its blocked by @!#$ an a pain to remove. other than that its free sailing!!
yea it is easy to do, but that one bolt going from the washer resivor through the bong is a pain. I ended up sawzalling it off, so ther eis still some of the bong left over, but not affecting air flow.
How did you end up getting the bolt out??

By tearing and hanging on the thing till it moved enough to get the bolt out. I didnt care about saving it.

i just took a pry bar and just jerk the hard and it came right off no extra effert to it. did not mess up anything,
i just did this too. i just kept twisting the bong and it eventually walled the hole in the plastic and fell off the bolt. i also relaced the resonator over the tb with a couple pieces of intake pipe. sounds better (louder) now. i think if i keep my foot out of it i'll see some mpg gains.

Who knows...weight savings count too for those who count every little pound. The resonator has a lot of bends and passages, not to mention its put together like a freaking lego. If you're under there, get rid of it...why not?
congratulations you just removed a factory cold air intake. and swapped it for a warm air intake
Maken Waves wrote:congratulations you just removed a factory cold air intake. and swapped it for a warm air intake
Factor cold air intake? That's pretty hilarious. With or with out the bong, air is being drawn from the fender well. With out the bong however, the air does not have to pass through about 360 degrees of bends to get to the filter. I don't know what kind of air intakes you prefer to run, but the stock system on the cavalier is hardly a CAI.
If you want the bong to install on your car for a CAI you can have it...you can have it for free!! Yea free factor CAIs for everyone!!
Got fed up, FINALLY ripped mine out tonight...
-Performance increase? Nope.
-Sound any different? I already had a short ram, so nope.
-Lighter car? Kinda... 2, 3 pounds?
But am I happy I did it? Yes and I'd do it again because it's almost a right of passage on J-bodies to rip that stupid thing out! It doesn't make a warm air intake though, heck I already had one, and if anything now the cold air is more direct to the engine bay rather than going through a maze where it can expand and slow down due to restrictions. Plus i wanted to get it out because I'll be making my own air box that feeds right from the hole.
So ya, anybody who'd like a free intake resonator, I've got one up for grabs too

Wait, its not an intake resonator its a
factory cold air intake!!

x2 if you can rotate the "factory cold air intake" enough then you can eventually get to the bolt with an extension and a small small wrench.. but it takes a ton of 1/16th of a turn to get it out

- Check the profile for all mod's. It's up2date!
wrench = socket wrench.. just incase..

If it helps, I disconnected the washer line and connector, pulled the whole assembly out onto the road, loosened the bolt just a bit, stuck a pry bar in between em and my foot on the washer reservior and one good pop knocked them apart. You will spend forever turning that bolt otherwise...

u dunnn know. 2lbs?? try 2 oz. that thing will make maybe 1.5hp and the drop in filter another 1.5. and your still sitting in the 90 degree hotter air. your far from a CAI. and intakes are 3" not 2.5".

i can't belive how many posts are in this topic WOW
don't for get to add your K&N sticker to make up for the warmer air if you want more of them i got some here you put 5 of them on with removing this part your 2.2 will be equal to a 2.4

ehhh yea. I dont know how you guys are saying warmer air. Its coming from the exact same area, just not forced around all kinds of bends. And the only one that claimed it was a factory CAI was Mr. "maken waves". I never claimed that -I only said that this is a restricive piece of plastic @!#$ that is worth the time of removing. If you want to call it a step toward doctoring up the factory intake, so be it. The tubing between the TB and the airbox also needs to be replaced, and that can be done for far less than the 200 bucks most would spend on a real intake..
To each his own...
Stickers should probably have their own topic BTW.
Either way I had a short ram to begin with and that means no factory air box. So without the bong on i'm getting air entering at the exact same place. I'm not claiming it DID anything, just that it didn't hurt anything. Plus i have been planning to make a custom air box that would run from the air inlet in the engine bay.
And not that I said it, and i have a 3" intake, but intakes can be 2.5". Not everyone's intake on here is picked up off the shelf. And my 2.2 (L61) IS already equal to a 2.4.

Do you think the bong would be easier to get to when the car's up on a hoist? lol my dad owns a distributorship for Rotary Lift, so we have one set up for his project cars.
Probably it would be easier but I didn't even take mine off the ground or take the wheel off. Just turned it to the left.

Oh I see, you're making fun of me. Well I was making fun of you too, for your reasoning that the air with out the resonator is warmer than the air with the resonator as they are both coming from the exact same place, but one goes through all kinds of retarded bends. You can keep your stickers since you seem to be the expert on gains/sticker. Have fun!
