So I picked up an immaculate sunfire from a junk yard for $700 and put a new crate motor in (2.2, 1997 Sunfire). Car ran great for first 300 miles, but I noticed the oil light coming on and off after the car was warm. So I put in a mechanical oil gauge that is showing 0 oil pressure at idle once the car is warm.
Now I am mechanically inclined, so I know its probably a bearing issue, but the reason I am posting is because someone told me their 2.2 did the same thing for a while and then stopped all of a sudden. Has anyone else here had the same issue that just worked itself out? Or do I need to get ahold of my warranty papers and have this engine replaced?
Where are you getting your reference for your pressure? In the back of the block by the stock oil pressure sensor?

Yes I removed the oil pressure sensor and installed the gauge there.
Also, I know the reading isnt wrong, because when it reaches 0 the engine does act up, and the idle does fluctuate
Hmm thats where I had mine on my old 2.2.. Even with bad bearings, you should still have pressure.. While the engine is running, is there any bad noises coming from it that you can hear?
Im sure you took the right sender out, but look again because there are two senders back there if I can remember correctly.. Id try the other oil pressure reference to see if you get pressure.. If not, then check the power and ground to your gauge.. Then if ALL THAT still doesn't work, then call up the place where you got your engine..
Good luck.

Lol, I am a mechanic, I know how to hook up a oil gauge lol. Im just asking if anyone had heard of these cars doing this for a while and then going back to normal. Just wanted to make sure before I tear this baby back out.
There is no power/ground on a mechanical gauge except for the illumination.
And in my previous post i said the car obviously has no oil pressure because it does act up when the pressure is reading 0.
But it looks to me that it is going to have to come back out. Which ruins my fun considering I just put it in there. Thanks for the info
Well scuse me mr mechanic. Just throwin stuff out there lol.

Lol really?
..are you a good one?
are there any other engines that randomly have 0psi oil pressure then go back to normal?
