CTI / Tsudo, Exhaust leak or something else?
Thursday, July 31, 2008 6:20 AM
I have a CTI 2.5" magnaflow hiflow cat and tsudo header installed, with a dynomax super turbo muffler

Most days when i accelerate around 3000 rpm's it gets louder and harsher sounding

other days its quiter still has rasp but its much less "pronounced" i guess and "feels" like it accelerates smoother and faster, althought it could just seem like it since its not as loud and makes the engine seem like its not worknig as hard to get going, anyways....

My dad and I have had it up on the lift and checked everywhere for exhaust leaks, plugged up the muffler and listened at the header flanges and all over the exhaust, cant find anything! the exhaust was warm so I thought maybe thats why we couldn't hear anything because the exhaust expanded and sealed the leak but...

the other thing is that SOME mornings that are relatively cool and damp, It was quiter and smoother when i stepped on it while the engine / exhaust was still cold like today, it just wasnt nearly as harsh or lud sounding. and sometimes its louder in the morning when cold and seems to be quiter and smoother once the engine has warmed up especially in the afternoons?

this is driving me crazy Do exhuast notes change this much just due to weather/ temperature? is it a phantom leak, or could it be something else entirely?

How long ago was this installed. It could be that the muffler just got broken in.

exhaust has been on for a few months header 1 or 2 less than that, but it goes back an forth, sometimes its loud sometimes its not, it been going back and forth for a while, and it SEEMS faster when its quiter but i know butt dyno's dont count

I have that same issue. It always sounds like I have an exhaust leak when it's cold, but once it warms up it's quiet. I have a similar setup as well.

strange thing is today when the engine was cold it was quiet (and felt quicker) by the time i got to work it started sounding slightly louder,

its driving me crazy

its the collector on the header. i have the same problem. when you drive the car the exhaust moves and the ball and socket joint moves around sometimes letting the exhaust escape through a gap in the joint. try tightening up the bolts and i also recommend replacing the bolts that came with it with stainless ones because the ones that came with it will rust in no time and you will just have to replace them anyways.....

I have the exact same setup as you minus the header; and I understand exactly what your talking about. Its the nature of the muffler i guess. I'm going to have a resonator installed with my header, and have them check my catback install for clearance and leaks.

But yea, you're not alone. Mine sounds raspy when its cold out even at part throttle around 2.5k rpm. It screams though even when warm above like 4k rpm. I have a sound clip on youtube, but im blocked at work. search username "rwl041".

I'm now wishing i would have followed some other's advice and went with a resonator from the start.

the tsudo doesn't have a ball and socket collector, thats pacesetter, on a 2.2 eco anyways

my magnaflow cat-back does the same thing.
cold motor=raspy
hot motor=smooth mellow sound.

every day. same thing. no exhaust leaks, just happens.

what drives me the most crazy though is that some days cold motor= smooth mellow sound, hot motor= more rasp and some days its the other way around ...

like yesterday and today, yesterday it was smooth pretty much the whole way to work on a cold engine. today- much raspier, but got a little better by the time i got to work!
