Can anyone give me some advice on this swap? Id like to know what motor would be easiest to swap in,3100,3400,or 3800? Id also like to know the pros and cons of doing each one? I have access to a few 3100 motors but I have read that they will not bolt up to my automatic trans, which I would like to retain. Also what do u think a swap like this would cost?Or should I get a new 2.4($850.00 at the junkyard)?
All will require a trans change since the 2.4 trans has a different bolt pattern.
So far for my 3400 swap, I've sunk about 3500 in, some of that is my own fault either buying the wrong parts or breaking them.
Not sure where in Montana you are, but these are the prices for Colin's in Missoula
3400 will run you 750
3100 about the same
3800 is $1200, not sure if it has the blower.
The 3800 is the hardest of the swaps.
3100/3400 is near bolt in (see the sticky in the third gen forum). 3800 requires a custom subframe.
good luck to you...use the search button, plenty of people have done these kind of swaps....they've got all the info you'd need...just do your research before you git into it...
Project Resurrection is in full swing!
I am planning on buying a 1990 cavalier with a 3.1 and a 5 speed
I have a 2.4 on a5 speed in my 2001 sunfire(which is shot and not enough power)
I plan on taking the front end out of the cavalier and put it into my sunfire to support engine
why go to a heavier engine with little power gains? why not find a 3400 and put that one in. same amount of difficulty to do, and with more gains.
to add on, the frames on the second gen and the 3rd gen are very different. you'll have a bitch of a time bolting it up.
well I am going to swap for the 3.4 but was told to take a bell housing off of a 2.2 and put that onto the 2.4 5 speed. will this work??? if I do this swap, I am going to need step-by-step instructions for the wiring, as I am completely new with this fuel injection stuff.lol where would I be able to find those??? the only other thing I can think of is the A/C, any suggestions???
if you need a step by step its probably to complicated but that aside you will need to get wiring diagrams of both cars and match them but up there is a sticky about this swap in the 3rd gen that you are going to want to just make the mounts
3400 is a stroked 3100. If you go 3800 get the third gen.

the transmissions are one piece units I believe. what you could do, have some one else make the harness for you who has done it before so you don't have any set-backs. just get 2 harness's. one for the 2.2 OHV and one for the 3400. this will make the swap easier for you in the long run. also, check out the third gen forum, there is a guy over there who is making a lower engine mount bracket for the 3400.

how often do you see a 2.4 in a second Gen?
