ebaY catback - all opinions welcome
Saturday, August 16, 2008 1:37 PM
I've been looking around ebaY lately and I keep coming across this item:

CLICK

It looks like it could bolt up fairly well. If it really is 2.5", it should work well with my plans for my '98 Z24. It also has a resonator, which covers the major concerns about ebaY catbacks I saw voiced in earlier similar threads. Stainless steel and $200 to my door almost seals the deal.

Anyone have any experience with this particular item? Any thoughts about it (other than the crappy fart can looks!) are welcome and encouraged.

cheap stainless isn't the same as real stainless, it'll probably rust in two years, less if you live up north.. the resonator will most likely sound like crap, as will the muffler. you can do MUCH better for the same or less money.

Bad idea !!! The pipe that goes over the rear axle is not bent enough to clear properly. If your car is lowered at all, its going to hit.

Magna Flow Cat-Back....FTW!!! or Go Custom

I have the exact same exhaust off ebay on my 2000 Z24 S/C...it is pretty loud thats for sure but don't mind the sound of it...and what slvr05cav has to say he is kinda right...It seemed to kinda rattle when taking off at low rpms...I just recently lowered my car with the eibach pro-kit with AGX's and it doesn't seem to hit much more...they did have to bend it a bit to get it to fit better but nothing too major...the fit was surprisingly good for the price of it...as for diameter it isn't quite 2.5"....more like 2 3/8" on the outside...If I don't buy a Nissan 350 Nismo in the spring I will be probably upgrading the exhaust system from the cat forward...want to get a custom 2.5" downpipe from my 4-1 header and get a 2.5" cat and there is a small piece where the rear O2 sensor is where it is only 1 7/8" which is extremely restrictive for me...as for the exhaust durablity...I have had it on for one winter (In PEI/NS Canada and we have a lot of salt on the roads) and for one summer and it seems to be holding up well...the muffler itself gets pretty cruddy looking after a winter of salt and I thought it was ruined come spring...but I took some chrome polish to it and brought it back to almost new...now rust at all on the muffler...as for the piping it is a little cruddy looking if you crawl under the car but I would imagine it would be like the muffler and with a litle tlc and polish it would come right back...overall I am happy with it for the price of it but since I am s/c'ed I would like to get a custom 2.5" catback with a decent muffler and maybe a resonator...anyways, thats what I have to say about that muffler...if u are looking for something cheap and works half decent I would recommend it...

My thoughts are similar however I am biased with my custom Magnaflow setup. From previousl experiences, cheaping out on anything to do with your car is a bad idea. I had a cheap setup like this on my 92 Honda Accord and it was @!#$tay for sure. When I got my Sunfire and put on a nice oval muffler and a huge 22" resonator I got a very nice mellow tone that doesn't drown you out on the highway when talking to your passengers. I would assume this is made of @!#$tay quality and your money would be much better spent on something of better build quality.

i have that same exhaust (needed something quick and cheap), the lower rpms are a little raspy at take off, but that can be due to my header and not having a resonator (catback didnt come with one). its not annoyingly loud either.

mine measured out to be 2.5" inner diameter, and it also fit fine. im lowered too.
i don't drive my car in the winter so i can't say anything about it holding up to the salt.

i had a custom exhaust with 2 magnaflows on my old fire, and actually like this setup more. believe it or not the magnaflows sounded a lot more raspy than this catback.

my friend has this on his 02 2200 auto sedan and it fits great doesnt rattle at all and the resonator actually works pretty good, its not near as loud as my set up but it has a nice tone to it especially for a canister style muffler it really surprised me.

(btw I have custom 2.5" mandrel bent piping from header back with magnaflow cat and flowmaster super 40 muffler and 3" tip)

Here are some pics,
they sent the wrong sized bolts and had to find some that worked in a random nut/bolt drawer

the lack of support made us rig up a strap

the pipes barely fit all the way together and the clamp was too small and had to force it over the pipe. and i have no idea where they were going with that bracket. it was off by about 2.5 feet

we had to bend the piece that goes into the rubber holder so it would fit

and it barely clears the axel but it does, best i could do on this pic

Sorry if they are bad pics and try not to flame on my ability to rig things up........

wow, hack job! thats retarded! But I guess if you can make it work, hey! Honestly tho, thats about on par with $200. Eventually get a good muffler and be done with it. Budget exhaust dot com.

Anton - you might wanna start thinking about doing something more than just that coat hanger to keep it up, I am not sure how long that is going to last. I did the same thing with my exhaust with the strap, just to keep it from scraping. Strong work.
