L.O. manifold gone wrong, need help ASAP
Tuesday, August 19, 2008 9:38 PM
Sorry if you guys helped someone before for this but I am not sure what went wrong with the swap, I used the 2.3 manifold gasket, L.O. manifold(cracked it but fixed with some hi-temp metal(some liquid stuff at Canadian tire), I used the MAP sensor from the quad, and left the sensors that were on the throttle body on and plugged my wires into it, But every time I try to start it the RPMs instantly rocket up to 6,000rpm, and thats without touching the gas peddle, I used the 2.3 throttle body, and throttle body cable bracket, I didn't install the cruise control yet, What did I do wrong? I really need the car up and running by Thursday(very important), any help would be VERY MUCH appreciated. ]

I'm sure those pics may help

Are there any vacuum leaks? like, are all the holes filled in on the intake manifold? And if so, how is the tension on the throttle wheel/cable?

I would recommend not having the air oil separator hose connected where you have it. Remove the hose from that port and cap the port off, see if that fixes it.

Also, I thought you were to use all your 2.4 sensors...., but it has been YEARS since I had an LO on my car.

yea...im pretty sure he was supposed to use all 2.4 sensors...but if the idle is really shooting up that high it very well could be a large vavuum leak

"-Install the IAC and TPS sensors on the throttle body (make sure you use the right sensors 2.3L sensors for 2.3L TB and 2.4L sensors for 2.4L TB), be extremely careful with the bolts because they will break if over tightened." that was taken from the HO Swap guide

isn't there a port on the back of the manifold that needs to be blocked off?

I would use the map sensor from the LD9, use the TPS from the quad, maybe the air bypass valve is bad and needs to be replaced, that sensor lookin thing in this pic, at the top of the TB

definitely a vacuum leak if that isn't the issue. Where did you crack the mani, maybe when you "fixed" it, it wasn't done well enough. Especially if it was done on the side that sits up against the head.

sounds like a vacuum problem to me.,....

does idle go back down after the initial 6k starting rpm, or does it stay there?

It COULD be the IAC, but I would lean towards a large vacuum leak first.

Make sure there are no open ports on the mani, and make sure it is making good contact with the head.

thats the patch job I did for the intake manifold. like I said I used the liquid hi-temp metal to do it

and Will there isnt that much slack everything is set up and looks like its suppose to, so I rule out the throttlebody on this one I too believed there was a leak but didnt have idea where to start looking

dont take this the wrong way, but.......why do all this work for a manifold that is cracked?

The two bolts on the side of the trans case that hold the ground... did you swap them around? I forgot to do that on my 99 Cav when I did this swap a long time ago... the bottom edge of the manifold wasn't even touching the head. The stud with the ground wire and nut on it was in the way... once I switched them (bolt to the top, stud w/ nut to the bottom) I had the clearance I needed.

^^^^ what John said but there is no doubt about it you have a leak a very large leak.

I just went out and redid it all with new manifold and tried what you told me John but now Im not even getting a ticking from the starter

sounds like you didnt get all the grounds reconnected.....

ya thats what I was thinking cause the upper bolt had 2 wires in a loom, and then a nut, then a ground wire, and the bottom bolt only had the one, and I kept the 2 on the top bolt but when I swapped then I put the ground that was attached on the bottom bolt thinking that should be enough of a ground do you think if I left the bolts swapped and just have the 3 on the top that my ground problem should be taken care of cause the car does run when you push and pop the clutch so its just a matter of getting my starter to work again. And you can notice the bottom end torque isn't as strong but over 3,000 is great. glad I didn't go to the H.O., and I stayed with the 2.3 MAP sensor for the drive and it worked just fine using all 2.3 sensors.

Sounds like you missed the small black wire that goes to the starter recall relay (mounted on the front frame rail). That's assuming you've had the recall done... if not... IDK... something else

You don't need both bolts... you could chuck the top one and put all the grounds onto the bottom bolt... or stud... whatever you end up using.
