I finally got my harness and computer and have some issues. This is the details on my swap. It use to be a 99 sunfire 2200 auto. It has a 2000 2.4 in it now with the getrag. The harness and computer is suppose to be from a 97 2.4 5 speed cavalier.
First i didn't get the injector harness. Don't know if it suppose to unplug or what but the harness i have doesn't have the injector clips.
Second none of the plugs on the harness that goes up along the tranny will plug into the sensor on the tranny.
Third is i have like 3 plugs i have no idea where they go that is also on the harness by the tranny.
Fourth i tried to see if it would fire off starting fluid since i didn't have the injector harness and it was a no go. The only things that wasn't pluged in was the injectors, knock sensor, tranny sensor guessing it is the speed sensor. and the manifold o2.
Last one is my reverse lights suppose to work? is it a sensor on the tranny or in the cabin? O and my theft light is lit solid also.
Need help.. i think the yard shipped me a auto harness.

Im not sure if I read that right, but if you have the 2000 2.4 and getrag in the car, then you need a 2000+ wire harness.
The 97 is different. Especially the tranny. Im sure there is on the motor too but I cant remember what. Things like the 2000+ no longer having the EGR and what not...

Correct,
man you have the wrong yea harness.. You NEED the 2000-2002 harness for the reason mentioned above.

how do i got the wrong harness? I knew about the egr which is no big deal. The fuel injectors and rail, knock sensor and o2 sensor have been swaped out from a 96. I had a feeling the plug for the tranny might be different but everything else pluged rigth in. And i know you can use the 2000 tranny in any of the 96 to 99 j's just not sure if the plugs are different.
I was told i could use a 96 to 99 harnessand pcm if i had switched that stuff out by a few on here. So who is wrong and who is right now? The only thing is i have 4 plugs on the tranny side that i'm not sure where they go.
Two gray plugs with the blue rubber around it. Which i know one has to be the iat sensore. One is toward the intake manifod kind of by the starter and the other is by the tranny. I don't have the intake tubing on to find out which one goes where. The othe plugs i believe would go to the tranny which i have pics of.

This one is up by the idi cover actually

that on is by the idi cover which i kind of think it goes to the injector hareness but not sure.
A 99 harness and computer would have been the optimal choice... due to lack of EGR and the right knock sensor... but with some work, you can make this go.
That last pic is the EGR. Injector harness comes off the front of the motor, up the side of the timing chain assembly. It should be in the loom for the throttle body stuff...
Let's see what else I can get..
Second from the bottom - if the wires are tan and gray, then it's the IAT sensor.
The top pic, the single wire plug is for the knock sensor... this is where it's going to get difficult for you. The 00 motor has a two wire knock sensor, and it's a different size than the 96-98 2.4L was. So you can either find a 99-02 harness and lop off the plug, splice the wire you've got and add a ground wire.... or find a 96-98 knock sensor, drill and tap a hole for the smaller sensor... or rig it up somehow to fit in the larger hole. Up to you, get creative
Purple/yellow is the VSS sensor on the back of the transmission. Is the harness from an auto or 5 speed?
Thanks john i got it running today. Kind of felt stupid actually. Went to the yard to get the injector harness and found out where most of them went too. But still couldn't get it running. Took the fuel injector tester things my uncle had and of course no injector pulse or spark.
Well i was like i know there is a crank sensor so where is it finally found it and started right up. Some people on here need to get there info straight though because of misinformation like above would mess people up big time.
As for the egr a guy at on of my local shops has a tech 2 and said he thinks he can freeze frame the egr or turn it off. But if not i will deal with it tell i get hptuners. o and the knock sensor is a done deal now. I took the one out of the 96 block i had. O and the o2 sensor i solved that lil problem with my innovative wide band so that wasn't a big deal.
The harness is for a 5 speed, found that out today for sure. I just need to get the reverse lights working and the speedo. I realized the plugs were different between the 96-99 tranny and the getrag. Think you can help me out there? also where in the heck is the second plug on the tranny? i can't seem to find it, the only one i can is the one towards the back on top of the tranny where a 2 wire plug would go.
O and i can't figure out where a red plug that is in with the low coolant and low pressure sensor for the ac goes. Would you happen to know?

Wow, a little self confident there are we? I like to know what "misinformation" because as far as Im concerned, I wasnt wrong.
And I never said you were wrong, or the wire harness being wrong. And never said it couldnt work.
And even if you went off on a fantastic journey to get the "more propper" wire harness... boohoo, big deal.
On a side note, Im glad you DIDNT have to go on that journey and got it to run. Good job.
acually you kind of were and kind of not i know i didn't state that i switched those things. But 99 is the same as 2000 up sensor wise and all cept the tranny. So buddy there's no need to get your panties in a bunch just cuz i didn't say what parts of what u stated was wrong. And also if you want to be technical i couldn't use a 2000 up harness to begin with. With out changing out everything in the car.
And if ya wanna be a D1ck go somewhere else besides my post and do it.
And whitecav no disrespect to you either i was just stating the info was wrong in my case. And if i'm not mistakin i though you posted along with a few other in the post about me having trouble finding a harness. Where i was told i could use the 96-98 harness if i switched those things out.
Egad... Back on topic!!!
There are two plugs on the Getrag. One is the output shaft near the axle seal, that's the VSS (purple and yellow wires). The other is the backup sensor and I know it's a light green, but I can't remember the other colour wire. It's near the shifter assembly, beside where the rear mount bolts to the trans case.
Red plug is EVAP for sure... probably the purge solenoid, if it's near the A/C. It's supposed to sit on a little bracket above the A/C compressor, and there's a hard plastic line that goes from the EVAP line (third fuel line under the car on 99+ cars.. divert it to the metal line on the charcoal canister from your passenger fender well if you have it there like I did). The other side goes to the throttle body.
I'll have to look jon i swear i didn't see the plug by the axle seal. Is it on the driver or passanger side. The plug on the tranny that i actually found is if your looking at the the tranny from the front is to the left on the top of tranny close to the firewall. And where you put the plug in faces the firewall.
Also i have two red plugs. The evap one is in the loom of wires with all the ones with the throttle body sensors and the one that goes to the a/c. I have the evap pluged in and on the throttle body but not pluged into the metal line that goes to the back of the car.
O and just curious how are you suppose to know which wire on the knock sensor is ground? Cuz i still got to drill the whole and all that for the 96. O and which wires do i have to hook up for the clutch safety switch? If i don't find the info searching through all the posts agian.
Other than that i had it running for probably 20 mins today toppin off the fluids, and everything is working just fine. Besides a leak and the thermostat where the metal pipe is for some reason think it is cuz the pipe is a lil bent on the bottom and warped the flange where it bolts to the pump. Just got to figure out why i have a misfire somewhat about every 5 to 8 secs at idle.
And idling open mandifold kind of sounds like a cammed v8 a lil. But that will change tomarrow when i put my 2.5 inch mandrel bent exhuast on.
clutch safety switch goes to the thick yellow and purple wires under the dash. On the 2 5 speed conversions I did, I didn't hook the CSS up.
The 97-98 knock is only one wire.... so I'm not sure what your asking.....
The reverse switch is on the right side of the trans, between the trans and the frame rail (that area).

John said i could use the 2000 knock sensor but i would just have to ground one of the wires. I'll have to look at the tranny for the plug agian. And not having a clutch saftey switch doesn't bother me but i would like to wire it up..
I am having a problem and not sure if is my lc1's o2 sensor needing caibrated since i had it unpluged or what but at idle it sounds like it has a big ole cam in it.
Somewhat sounds like a helicopter. It mis'sa lil bit but idles just fine on the tach. The needle stays right around 900 and 1000. But it doesn't miss/jerk at all anywhere else but at idle.
The only things that aren't pluged is the egr and knock sensor o and the low coolant light. O also it will somewhat idle better when you just start it up but if you rev on it 2 to 3 times it'll start it. If you shut it off and start it back up it be fine till you rev it agian.
Nevermind i figure out the running problem. I found out that one of the injectors the o-ring busted in which was sucking air. All is fine now with the idling part.
But back to the knock sensor which wire is hot and which is ground? There is a red and a white coming out of the knock sensor. In which i figure the white is ground and red is the pcm signal. Just want to be sure. John can you help me out with that one.. thanks

Did you ever figure the wiring out for the knock sensor???
