So I 've been playing with a stock 2200 on Desktop Dyno 2003 and retarded the cam timing -5 degrees on the stock cam. This yielded 8 more hp and 4 more ft/lbs of torque on a stock engine. My question is can this adjustment be done with the stock cam gear or do I need to find an aftermarket one? Also will this cause the valves to hit the pistons or is there enough clearance threre? Also since I lack HPT how do you think the stock ecm will handle this? I searched but couldn't find anything.

Don't let the punks get to you. If they can't say anything helpful its because they probably

Sadly, there isn't a cam-timing set you can get that will allow you to do that. The best available to us LN2 builders is the '82 OHV 1.8L set, which is a double-roller (Re: Stronger), but even that takes a lil' fab work on the block to make use of since it wasn't designed to be a bolt-on part. And it's non-adjustable, too.
This is the problem with the LN2: It got the short-end of the stick because all the focus went to building the Quad4. And since that engine made power comparable with what's expected from a 6-cyl or a V-8, it got very popular & all the hot parts get made for it, 'cause everyone automatically flocks to the hotter one in performance. While the lil' ol' Double-deuce gets the eyeing as nothing more than a lowly "Econo-car" engine, that only got any type of refinement as an effort to improve fuel-efficiency & driveability before finally getting killed for being seen as "Outdated" by the modern car buyer.
I think it's a shame the way the Tu-tu gets overlooked like this. It would be so nice if an adjustable, double-roller chainset that was a direct bolt-on for the LN2 was made. Many of us here (And on other boards as well that like this engine & have it in something, be it car or truck) would like to see such a thing be produced. Heck... Some of us wish there were a forged crank made for it, even though the stock cast unit is nuke-proof!
Go beyond the "bolt-on".
could someone make an adjustable cam gear like the do for sbc's and maybe run a belt outside the cover to not worry about oil
Thanks guys. I guess I'm just to used to V8s. I keep forgetting about lack of aftermarket support. I'm planning on getting a cam regrind down the road. I was just hoping by some miracle I could pick a little free horsepower in the meantime. The numbers looked even better when I added my exhaust into the program. We should put together a petition for abolton doubleroller adjustable timing set. Then send it to TTR, Jegs, Summit, Edelbrock and everyone else I can think of. Our motors might be old school but that doesn,t mean it doesn,t have potentail. Sgoot look how many people are still building ohv V8s.

Madjack, what cam would you recommend for my 2200. All I have is a cai which hooks directly to the throttlebody and pacesetter header into stock exhaust into (6" before muffler) 2.5" pipe into 3" magnaflow muffler ($8 at junkyard still looked new). I'm goimg to build another motor on the side but just wanted some more pick up from this one. I'm thinking something more for torq to give it more punch when I floor it. I'm also thinking when I start my other motor build of taking a page from the oldsmobile play book and building a torquer motor. Since it seems to me that is more what the 2200 is anyways. But for now I'm thinking a simple cam swap would nice since I don't really know how to port a cylinder head myself. It would need to work with the stock tune though since I don't have hpt yet.

i would just call a cam regrinder and tell them what you do with the car and what you are looking for they can match a grind to what you want

I'll have to do that. Thanks for signing the petition. I also pasted the link up on clubcav so it gets more coverage. So welcome to the OHV revolution LOL. ( typed while listening to Twisted sister: We're not gonna take it). What do you think of my torquer motor idea?

Nice, Bob... But what about the plug in the lifter galley that supposed to vent said galley of air & lube the chainset? Would we change the plug or just make the cover on this to allow it to still do one of it's duties?
And Outlaw: A torquer-motor sounds great to me. I have two S-truck powered by Double-Deuces & a bump in low-end torque sure would help mileage & driveability.
Go beyond the "bolt-on".
the sbc chevy has that plug there to and i think it still sits behind the cover and drains to the oil pan, where this has a belt no lubrication would be needed
does anyone make offset woodruff keys? Because my boss uses one in his dodge dakota. I have talked to him about doing the same thing but I havent gotten around to it.
DRIVE HARD OR DONT DRIVE AT ALL!!!
if you are talking about offset crank/cam timing keys yes they are made, we used to run a 3 degree key
Okay... Where do we find those?

if you check around you can find them for the sbc i will ask my engine builder but they are old technology since adjustable cam gears so it will take some searching
