I got a "cold air intake" (HAHA yeah right) off of eBay about a year ago for my 98 Z24, it has a decent looking cone filter on it, the kind with the concave tip for more surface area with the steel mesh on it. I'm wondering if this is equal to a K&N filter and if i can use a K&N cleaning kit on this eBay filter. the K&N filters i have been looking at look the same except they have a flat tip instead of the concave end and they run about 60 bucks (Canada) so i don't want to get one unless it will make a decent difference.
K&N oil is red and if the filter isnt red it wont look to great but you can use the spectre filter kit they carry at autozone or pepboys everything is clear in that kit.
Spectre or AFE cleaning kits, or your filter will have an odd color.
In my experience the filter is the LAST thing you want to cheap out on!!!! The AEM filter that came with my WAI wasn't good enough for the type of roads i'm driving. I live in rural Saskatchewan and driving on gravels roads is unavoidable lots of times. The AEM filter let fine dust through... bad enough that when i took the intake off i could wipe the TB with my finger and make it look like a dash that needed to be cleaned. It even let small snow particles through in winter... i took my intake off after the there was some snow ant there was water pooled inside the piping.
I've since changed to an Apexi Dual funnel filter. There a little more expensive but worth every penny. It flows great, lets nothing in and is a dry filter so a gentle shot of compressed air cleans the filter. If you go this route make sure you get the proper sized flange adapter so the filter neck matches your intake piping

I have a similar filter. From what I know (however I have yet to personally try) it will work. I have 2 of the those Generic Red filters and someday i will clean the one with the K&N stuff to see what happens but I believe you will be fine.
hey sleepy sunfire, what did you use to clean your aem filter? The same thing that is being stated above that I can buy at autozone or pepboys? I have an aem filter, and I was just wondering... They are oiled filters right? Not dry filters? And I live in a suburban area, so do I need to swap to a dry filter? I have looked in the tb and no dust or anything. I am looking for best flow, and I believe my aem will do the trick, but is a dry filter or oiled filter?
98z24, lowered 2", aem intake, cat-back striaght pipes!, cop ligths in the front and rear, 18" liquid metal's, primer black, tint, full audio and video.
my AEM was an oiled filter. I used the K&N cleaning and recharge kit to clean mine. Im not sure if the newer AEM filters are dry or not.
I don't know if you would need to switch to a dry filter or not... thats more your call. if your satisfied with the filter then your good to go. In my opinion if your looking for best flow don't go with a filter that has an inverted cone filter in the end of the filter...i've heard from different places that the create extra turbulence in the intake and restrict flow (minimal restriction but still there)
Many people won't believe me when i say this, but i thought i was going to 'upgrade' my intake with a new AEM dryflow filter. Well, after install, i went for a drive. To my surprise, the engine felt like it was starving for air. it had less power and acceleration. All i did was swap the filter, and i have experience in automotives, (was a mechanic at a jeep dealer) so i know i didn't do anything wrong. So what happened, i don't know. But the old filter went right back on. After a k+n recharge of course.
