Will head work mess with the computer?
Friday, October 03, 2008 7:09 AM
I have a 1993 Cavi I race on dirt tracks. I was talking to a machine shop about having some head work done--shave the head, 3-angle valve job, possibly port and polish. This shop does a lot of work on regular racing engines but not much on computer-controlled 4 cylinders. So the employee I talked to was a little concerned with whether doing this kind of work will cause problems for the computer....

Which would be a problem if so, because with my 1993 OBD I, I am having real problems finding someone who can burn a new chip or otherwise work on the computer.

So, anyone have any insight on whether shaving the head/valve job/port and polish would mess with the computer?

I did all of that and more to a Geo Storm and the computer did not know what the hell to do.
But, that is a totally different car and maybe yours wont have problems.

Depending on the amount of porting and existing mods, it may or may not be ok.

With bolt-ons, the computer relearns.
With porting, sometimes you can give the car more air than the injectors or fuel pump can deal with.
Even if the computer knows what to do, you would run lean at WOT.

if anything it would mess up your afr and then throw a code with the computer. more air less gas, imo. i might be wrong but thats what i would see could go wrong. i think you might be able to get megasquirt for this instead of hpt, but im not sure
