2.2 Cam Questions

My questions are about the cam that Scrufdog used. (.423" lift @ valve; 272 duration both lobes;
110 degree lobe centerline; 52 degrees overlap)

What would the idle be like with that much duration and could that cam be used on a daily driven car?

Can a stock cam can be reground to those specs?

i would say you would need to increase your idle speed significantly, and depends what you mean by DD.

yes it could run as a DD, but might be a little on the uncomfortable side.

To be sure I'd need to know what the duration is @ 0.050" and what the intake centerline is. Just looking at the lobe centers, it probably has a slight lope, maybe a little too tight for a computer controlled motor, with the vacuum being a bit low for something that is a DD. I know Scrufdog's an older '91 motor and it has a flat hydraulic cam with Comp Cams Magnum roller tip rocker arms. With the 272 advertised duration and 0.423" lift, I can tell it's a moderate cam. I doubt a stock cam could be reground to those specs. Being its an older flat hydraulic motor, there are some of the flat tappet cam cores available, you can get ground to just about any flat tappet profile you could dream of. If you have a newer hydraulic roller motor, though the lobe centers are limited, have more potential for DD/street cars or most power adders.

If you go to most cam companies web sites, they'll have a cam recommendation form, print it out fill it out to the best of your ability and scan it, find a host or e-mail/PM it to me and I'll see what I can come up with. I have listings for many different cam grinders, so I' shouldn't have too many problems finding something that will do the best for your application. Remember to take into consideration the valve springs and their capabilities and which model year head you have, because they can pose certain limitations on the cam & rocker arms you can use.
