I will start off by saying sorry now if this sorta thing has been asked already, i have tried the search option and didn't find anything .
I had gone to the local you pull it place a few days ago looking for some small parts when I noticed an ecotec engine sitting in the middle of the row just torn apart and spread all over , i thought it was a shame and wished I could'nt found it while it was still in one piece,then I got to thinking.. maybe I want to swap my engine
my question is since I have 98 cavalier what are my options, or more so what are my year to year limitations?
I ask this because I found out about ten minutes ago that saturn ions have ecotecs in them,thinking back to the you pull it place they had a saturn ion sitting by the garage waiting to get the gas tank stripped and thrown in the yard..
Im not sure what year it is but it got me wondering about what years i could put in mine. if the engine from the newer saturn could fit mine with little to no modification needed I think it would be worth the 70 dollars for the engine (car was pretty new,engine was untouched so should work fine,looks like the car was hit pretty bad rear drivers side)
is this something worth looking into?
sorry if gets asked alot or if its pointless, Ill admit I don't know much about these things and im just starting to learn and one of the best ways to learn aside from just doing it is asking questions..

For an eco swap into your car(pre-00) you are going to need a complete J donor car and everything thing has to be swapped.

Really? Cuz I typed "ecotec swap" into the search box and got 11 pages of anything.

ok fine.. let me correct y statement about not finding anything.
I didnt find anything answering my questions, I type in ecto tec swap..sure it comes up with 11 pages.. I try to narrow it down and I still dont find anything answering my questions.
I type in ecotec swap 98 and it comes up with one thread and its about a five speed, I dont own a five speed so that one is of no help to me.
I type in ecotec swap cavalier and it returns one thread with two replies asking about a ecotec from a buik for a 99 cavalier. again, not answering any of the qustions I asked.
I type in ecotec swap 98 cavalier and it returns nothing.. again. not answering anything I asked above..
now do you actually have some sort of input that could help another member or is this all just a pissing contest for you ?

Sigh... You need a 2000+ for it to be an easy swap.
Pre 99 you will have to swap everything over. Including the transmission. And I believe the mounts changed too.
