Recommended exhaust setup?
Saturday, December 27, 2008 3:55 PM
I've got a 98 two door cavalier with the 2.2OHV (2200?) in it.

At the moment I have an old Cherry bomb welded to the end of the stock pipe. It sound decent, but not great.

I've decided I want to have the exhaust redone and am going to pick the muffler and stuff by myself and then have them put on with 2.25" pipe.
I'm only gonna have a single pipe ran.

Is there a particular muffler that would sound good on these cars? I'm not looking to have the giant muffler at the end of the pipe. I also remember seeing a post somewhere that someone had said to run glasspacks behind the muffler to reduce resonating and high pitched noise. I have a glass pack (need to check length) so that's covered, but is this true?

No edit button?

I should have added, I'm looking for a deep tone (is this an oxymoron or what? (Since it's a 4cyl)). I'm not keen to the "pissed off bumble bee" sound.

You want the longest resonator you can find and mount it directly under the car behind the cat or where the cat should be. Magnaflow makes a 30", you can then put any muffler you want on the back. Stick with mandrel bent pipe, most shops use crush bends. If that's what they are going to put on you are better off with the stock exhaust.

As far as performance there is little any exhaust could do you make your car faster. It's only worth upgrading exhaust if you play to boost or N20.

This would be the type of style resonator to look for.

I have had about 5 different exhaust setups in the last year.

everything from flowmaster to dynomax.

The only setup I highly recommend is this,

-2.25 pipping
-pacesetter header,
-maganflow cat
-magnaflow resonator (biggest you can fit)
-And magnaflow cat-back.

Some don't wanna dish out the money for the magnaflow cat-back.

If you don't, then just buy a magnaflow muffler, and then have a shop bend you some 2.25.

this setup is very deep, not raspy at all.

Don't go with a flowmaster,
Just because they sound good on a camaro doesn't mean it will sound good on a cavalier.
So many people pick a flowmaster then hate the way it sounds.

The general word around here is magnaflow or dynomax super turbo.

Sorry but the 2200 is not going to let you have a deep tone.

Well, I never expected (and never really will) a *deep* tone from a 4cyl, but I don't want something that will sound raspy.

As for the resonator, a glasspack will work the same will it not?
Whats the cheapest you can get the headers? I've seen the listed on ebay, but they never seem to list a brand name.

I'm not looking for a huge performance boost, quite frankly, any boost would be a bonus, I mainly want it to sound good.

Anyone run the Cherry Bomb (actual muffler, not glass packs) mufflers? How do they sound?

Two mufflers, inline. A Magnaflow straight through going into a Dynomax Super Turbo.

Oh, thanks John!

Mine's not deep, but about as deep as an OHV can get. I've got a PS header, no cat (at the moment, was a Catco, took it off to test something, just never got around to putting it back on!), 35" Thrush Magnum Glasspack and Dynomax SuperTurbo, all with 21/4" mandrel bent tubing, welded by myself. I've also currently have some minor internal engine work, which will affect the sound some.

As previously stated, exhaust and other bolt-ons won't do a whole lot for performance. You'll need to do a P&P, get bigger valves and a cam regrind (200-208 degrees intake, about 10 more degrees exhaust. watch max lift) to start making decent power.

Ok, totally screwed that up

It's still readable though.

I think I understand what your saying. The performance statemant was a side note to the main part of the message.

What I was getting at is the set-up I have and what it sounds like. It would provide some gains though.

whichever canister has the right in/out diameters for you, and goes into a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler.. like I said.

an oval magnaflow muffler is what your looking for, so a 4"x9" or the 5"x8" with the longest length is what you should be looking at. I am currently using a 22" magnaflow resonator with a 4"x9" oval by 18" long magnaflow muffler on my 2200.

Ive come to thread jack.

I heard the ecotecs come with a fairly decent hi flow cat, is that true? If not, I am gonna get the magnaflow hi flow, and clamp it on to my stock exhaust and clamp on a dynomax super turbo muffler for now, then when I get closer to doing my build, weld them to a 2.5 in. piping.

Im sure they have adapters to go from the 1.75 or whatever size our exhaust is, to the 2.5 of the cat and muffler. Its all gonna be clamped on for now, but then welded when I get the piping.

Ok, instead of making a complete new thread, I'll extend onto this one.

My uncle just gave me a new Catalatic Convertor he had bought for an old Z24 he had. It's new and has never been put on. It's got 2.5" Inner diameter inlet/outlets on it though.
I'm not sure that adapting it to 2.25" pipe would hurt or not though so I ask, would 2.5" pipe hurt my 2.2?
Re: Recommended exhaust setup?
Sunday, December 28, 2008 5:38 PM
to 04 Ecotec....they do not make "adapters" to make different pipe diameters connect together, those have to be made custom at a shop and that catback you found on eGay is a piece of @!#$ if I remember correctly....people have commented on it in the past and it was made from bad components if I renember correctly.

as for private, 2.5" pipe will not hurt your 2.2 but it isn't going to help it. Getting an exhaust shop to fabricate some 2.25" pipe and have it connect to the 2.5" diameter cat isnt a big issue. I would just recommend using 2.25" piping and having the shop fab in the cat. However, you could just go 2.5" all the way....its really your choice. It depends on what you plan to do to your car. Keep in mind that most of the cars running under boost on this site are using 2.5" exhaust whereas everyone else who is running a N/A car is using 2.25".

Im gonna be going F/I eventually so I will be going with 2.5

Thanks for the heads up on the ebay catback, I just wanted it for the piping. It might still be worth it, who knows.

wow. i'm glad you told me, otherwise i might have had fake parts on my car.

I have an aero turbine 2540i in my car had all custom piping put on 2.5" back from the cat with an 18" resonator inline right before the muffler. its got a great deep tone no raspy sound at all and didn't cost me a whole lot either. i bought the muffler on ebay for like $100 and its all stainless so there's no worries about it rusting or looking like crap after a while and my gas mileage actually increased. my first setup was a simple 2.5" back with dual resonators Y'ed out to two tips welded on which cost me more and didn't sound too bad but the aero turbine definitley had a deeper meatier tone and brought the mpg up a few.

I love my magna flow i wouldn't trade it for a thing but now if i could get the whine out of the transmisson i would truely be happy with the sound
