IF had to choose between manifold swap or balance shaft delete Kit, which one?
Monday, February 16, 2009 6:21 PM
Hey,

Recently got big cams and good tune. Before I go building the engine up completely, I wanna do a small "bolt on" mod, since I don't have any but really two things I can think of. One, swab out my manifold for the 2.4 L Ecotec Mani, or get a balance shaft delete kit. I can get the car tuned with the manifold. Which one for about the same price would you guys choose if you had my set up?

Thanks

hmm well i would personally do a balance shaft delete, BUT if your going to pull the motor and stuff forged internals in it at some point, just get a used 2.4 mani i suppose

Exactly since the delete kit would be easiest if you pull the engine. And if you have it out then you may as well do a forged bottom end right?

Unless you feel like yanking out the motor to get the delete kit in there, I'd just go for the manifold. Its a worthwhile upgrade in its own right so long as you have HPT to tune for the difference (especially with cams and other airflow mods).

I helped PJ install his delete kit before he went to the LSJ bottom end, and neither of us can see any way to install it with the motor in the car. It was somewhat of a pain in the ass installing it OUT of the car actually....

That makes it a little easier. Don't plan to build quite yet, so mani would be first then the build. I bought a daily driver specially to be able to work on the build of the cavy! I am HPT tuned and I would have to be re-tuned with the mani. I currently am at 158 rwhp! Anyone throw out some numbers to what I could get once tuned with the 2.4L mani? Possible to gain 20 hp to the crank with this?

Um, 158 WHP. If you have 158 RWHP, you're driving a Solstice.

158 rwhp, my Honda makes that stock.

The BSD is way easier to do with the engine out, but it is actually possible with the engine still in. You have to remove the upper/lower mounts and pivot the engine slightly forward and down. The only reason you have to do this is to get the OEM shafts out. Once they are out the kit is really easy to get it. Installing the bushings is a bit tricky the first time you do it as most people have a tendency to be nervous and not want to tap the inserts hard enough. I normally allow for 6 hours to do the BSD install with the engine in, 20 minutes with the engine out and torn apart.

That being said a manifold swap is pretty straight forward and unless you were planning to be racing this year I'd do the manifold now and do the BSD when the engine is out or when you are already in that area for the timing chain or water pump.

my vote is the LE4 manifold. Easy bolt-on, and proven gains with tuning. Plus it will play nice with cams and a 7k+ RPM redline

I agree. Manifold now. I am tuned to 7 k but only get max tq and hp at 6500! With the mani hoping i will pull a little past 7 K as I don't want to rev much higher until built (drivetrain at least). Will get it soon and post up. Thanks
