Tone from resonator
Monday, July 06, 2009 5:44 PM
What does installing a resonator do to the sound of the exhaust on an eco? I have a pacesetter header, and vibrant catback. I'm not looking so much to quiet it down, but I am looking for a deeper tone, I'm assuming they go hand in hand. I'm just wondering if it makes the exhaust tone deeper or what it does. I may also be replacing the cat with a high flow version

it should give it a deeper tone thats for sure, all depends on what length you go with.

Go with the longest one you can fit. I only have a 28" one and I think my car sounds nice and deep toned. Im gonna drop the cat though and put in another resonator

Does the resonator make a big difference in the loudness department? Is it noticably quieter, alot quieter, or just a deeper tone?

It is noticably quieter, and not as "tinny" sounding. I actually like the idea of running two resonators - one in place of the cat...

Any n/a four cylinder with a header, no resonator, and a straight through design muffler (much like those on typical cat backs) is going to be loud. The only exception I've heard is the Apex'i world sport 2 exhaust, but there is no system for our cars

Yeah my 96 gt has a header, resonator(came with it), stock cat, and dual pipes and it has an awesome tone.

This is just my opinion, but, i don't try for the import tone, it's is hard to "make". Go by ear, and what you like. I am prbly going to be going with the magnaflow high flow cat in place of mine, but i am weary because my car sounds so good.

Yes you are correct. They go in hand in hand. It will make it deeper sounding and also quieter. The smaller the resonator the less effect it will have generally. If you replace your stock cat with a highflow cat, your exhaust will be louder so if you toss in something like an 18" long Magnaflow that is 4" round with a good Magnaflow cat, you may achieve the sound you want. If you still want to be loud but reduce the "tinny" sound, go with a resonator around 12 to 18" long. If you want to be quieter, go with a 22" or larger.

I have the same setup as the OP, the vibrant catback and pacesetter header. After I installed the catback it sounded basically just the way I wanted it, maybe a tad loud. Then I installed the Pacesetter ceramic header and now there is rasp.....would a resonator fix the rasp?? I'm not sure if it would because I can definetly tell the noise is coming from the header....

Resonator removed all rasp from my exhaust

But it sounds like the rasp is coming from my header, would the resonator which is obviously after the header fix that too?

Unless you have an exhaust leak at the header which is causing the noise, yes of course a resonator will help. The exhaust note you hear is a product of every component on your engine, they all modify it in one way or another before it makes its way out of the tailpipe.

You probably have a leak at your downpipe bolt area

Are you using the Spring and bolts that came with the header?

I ditched my one that came with mine and went with a solid bolt setup with a flex at the bottom of the down pipe

if u want a goood sounding exhasut deep and smooth use pace setter header with full 3" magnaflow exhaust and high flow cat run everything on the passenger side and under rear axle to get rid of 5 bends but warning big bumps will make it scrape but itl sound like u got something more than 4 cyl's in there

Well I bought the header used and it just came with the bolts for the down pipe. I don't know what you mean by spring...

Resonator resonates rasp, not sound.

Bigger resonator, less rasp.

Get the biggest resonator you can fit.
